Voltorb Flip is a drag since they removed the ability to purchase coins, Pokeathlon is extremely gay with its rewards(which were handed out for free in other games, like the evolution stones) and impossible to play on a mouse, the Safari Zone is easily the most obtuse and worst implementation of it (as if anyone’s waiting 3 months to catch a fucking Bagon), the BF was copy pasted from a better game.

Do you mean the type variety of the introduction of new mons? Cause Sinnoh does both worse.
Didn't pick the fire type starter? Ponyta for you! 3 electric types until post game and in a region where a third of the map is covered in snow you have 2 ice types, one of which hinders your team with a hail ability unless it's the other ice type. Type variety is so bad that boss fights don't even have full teams of their types. As for new mon distribution, see pic related.

I'm literally almost done with a SoulSilver nuzlocke as we're typing. When I'm 7 badges in and the Team Rocket grunts are pulling up to me with Level 27 Rattatas, I think there's a major problem with the level curve.

Also another issue with Johto is that unlike Sinnoh, a lot of the newly introduced Pokemon just aren't good in battle at all, especially before their Gen 4 evolutions got added.

I've also done Nuzlockes, but is it fair to factor in self imposed rules into critiquing a game? There's always duds in every generation and while Johto might not be the strongest mons, stuff like Quagsire, Skarmory, Heracross, Tyranitar and Espeon are a few examples og viable Johto mons. I concede that Gen 4 mons only made some Johto Pokemon better, but you don't need to play a sinnoh game for that.

Sinnoh also adds detrimental mechanics like fog: making an already slow game slower, a prime example of the poor presentation being the ghost gym: empty rooms with slow elevators that lead to literal maths problems on signposts is comical. Diamond and pearl also have the worst Ai in the series due to an oversight in the programming.

Everyone says that Platinum is an amazing game, but I would personally say it makes Sinnoh salvageable: Looker only exists to add pointless text boxes to already existing interactions, Charon adds so little that the remakes replace him finding Rotom with Cyrus and nothing was lost, in fact I think it works better for Cyrus to find Rotom. The Distortion world is nothing more than a cool themed hallway. The revamped type variety is good and some of the areas got needed visual upgrades but the battle frontier is in HGSS, so I don't really need to play Sinnoh games unless I REALLY like Glameow.

You're definitely right in that regard, but honestly it doesn't change much either way. The battles are the crux of Pokemons design, and the level curve means the game fluctuates between being too easy and "I have to grind 6 full levels on level 30 pokemon?". It's just kinda bad design all around, especially when you get to Kanto.

TLDR: Diamond and pearl AI choses moves at random. Apparently, it's smart enough to not use moves that will fail, but otherwise you're looking at a coin flip.

I know Emerald has this fully random AI and it also uses a sort of random AI but checking for stuff like immunities which is pretty much what you're saying and as far as I know that was on purpose. But I don't know if it was misplaced in gen 4 or something. Always cool to hear about the quirks of the AI.
