So what, exactly, is preventing game companies from either allowing players to run their own private servers, or from developing an offline mode, when they end their support for their always online live service games?

They want you playing the new slop, not the old slop.

Potential profit and playerbase. Being able to play old game competes with wanting to play new game. Especially if new game isnโ€™t much different from old game

>they can turn off the game so they don't compete with future games
>they can monetize without you having alternatives (mods)
>prevent others from profiting off their game
>release game piecemeal so you can cut losses if game fails
>subscription based monetization ensures constant income

They don't want you to. They want you to buy whatever new trash they're selling and it benefits them (theoretically) to prevent you from playing the old thing that they won't have control over.

Stop killing games is about to usher in a new 2001-like era if p2w private servers and the actual companies making said product are going to fuck off into oblivion leaving everyone high and dry because they've no means to defend themselves. We've seen this before and I can't believe we're about to do it all over again. Zoomers who weren't even sperm cells in their dads balls have no idea. What the fuck it is they have done.

Why do so many people think our cultural output should be artificially ephemeral to give corporations stronger IP protections and to make more profit on their new slop?

I mean, I can understand why capital would be fine with it. But why would random gamers support getting fucked in the ass by corporations?

The fact that they'd make less money when the inevitable remaster/rerelease comes out.
