Skill trees are bloat and every game that uses it as a mechanic are inherently flawed. A proper progression system is more linear, some branching can be good to give choices but whatever the clusterfaq in games such as HOI4 they're there to be clicked through multiple menus

borderlands did it right. theres 3 trees with 9 points of investment in them.
nothing too complex, can see the whole skill system in one glance, and plan your investment without too much math.
each combination of points also allows for a different fun and broken playstyle. now that was a good system worthy of AAA name.
sadly they made it a bloated piece of crap in borderlands 3 which is what made me drop it. not the dialogue. I can mute that.
