also the companion piece. his brother never really gained full sentience, did he? he just was foreverially insecure about his little brother mogging him during a training procedure, and then made it his life goal (a week btw) to upgrade himself to be stronger than gamma. there is so much fucking melancholic beauty in gamma's arc im fucking crying

I'm only now learning of this Fumie Kumatani's significant contribution to many of my favorite Adventure era tracks.
My sincerest apologies Queen.

I like the Egg Carrier’s second theme better than the first. Too bad it only plays in a cutscene.

what happened to Beta was pretty fucked up
>get beat by your "inferior" brother
>nearly left behind (only got in because you begged in the only way you knew how)
>get "upgraded"
>completely forgotten about on the wrecked egg carrier
>your inferior little brother shows up looking to kill you
>despite all your upgrades, still get your ass beat
>go for a kill shot when he has a moment of empathy
>die mad

Sonic Adventure's original lighting was really ambitious and dynamic, it's a shame they had to downgrade it before launch, they also brought the framerate down to 30 before release too so it running stable was obviously a high priority. If you look at some early pre-release footage you can see both better lighting and 60FPS gameplay

>Hitachi SH4 chips
>Rarely-used volumetric per-pixel shadows and volumetric fog features
>Order Independent Transparency and is the only system to date that came with OIT at the hardware level

In the Tokyo International Forum, you can see the Ninja Lights system in action. Dynamic shadows, lights and other effects that aren’t seen in the final game.

The final game removed most of the Ninja Lights system, but some of it is still leftover. Some objects like the TVs still use Ninja Lighting.

The Dreamcast had the ability to perform what was called Order Independent Transparency which SA2 used extensively for things such as item balloons and artificial chaos. When SA2 and SA1 were ported to Gamecube, many of the lighting and transparency features that the Dreamcast had couldn't be replicated and they were never fixed.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were extremely ambitious. Sonic Adventure 2 is a much, much, much more robust game internally than SA1. I cannot stress that enough. It is much more flexible in every conceivable way, and it is really impressive how much Sonic Team improved on in such a short time frame. But it is still obviously based on SA1 and shares a lot of infrastructure, albeit greatly improved

The main lighting issues SA2B has are the inability to draw the DC version’s shadows and specular lighting, which affects a lot of stuff (GUN robots, Shadow’s shoes, possible Sonic’s jaw even).

This track is incredibly nostalgic to me. Maybe because its also Station Square in there?
Any other vidya tracks like this? I really think its one of the composer's finest.

I'm not being sarcastic when I say I hope this sort of thing is in that document sent to Sonic Team on how to make Sonic games, if they're not going to touch the physics and gameplay I at least want a return to the unabashed passion of early 3D presentation efforts especially now that we have the processing and memory for it.
Don't misunderstand some attempts like in Unleashed were good but I want consistency.

Sonic Adventure & Sonic Adventure 2 were Iizuka's passion projects and he burnt himself out after Heroes

that costs money though that theyre not willing to spend
Also I feel like Sega used to be a more technically minded development culture, their old arcade games that were always pushing the envelope, the genesis, Shenmue, the sonic lighting stuff up till unleashed... I dunno who was behind it all but it doesn't really seem to be there anymore.

Sonic Team worked very closely with Sega's hardware which is how you got games like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, NiGHTS, SA1, SA2, etc

Heroes and Shadow 05 were built on Renderware. Supposedly because of Sony demanding they make a version of the game for PS2 or lose publishing access to the platform.

The game was originally built on a custom engine designed for GC and Xbox.

Sonic 2006, Unleashed and Generations were built for the Xbox 360 PowerPC hardware, then ported to PS3 afterwards

Sonic Frontiers and Shadow Generations were built for the Nintendo Switch using a fucking 20nm (Maxwell 2.0, Tegra-tier, 2014 tech) APU, PS4, and Xbox One.

As soon as Sony adopted the x86 platform, it was over. Mark Cerny did 15 presentations convincing Sony to use x86 for PS4. PS4 in particular is just BSD on AMD64, its fucking piss easy to write and optimize code for. PS4/PS5 are essentially x86 amd pcs running a OpenGL/Vulcan compatible GPU on top of a BSD based OS. couple that with numerous games using ue4x and its pretty easy and economical to put games on more machines. Microsoft thinks ahead because they have to due to their directx api, they need to be on the cutting edge. sony doesn't. so when xbox gets machine learning upscaling and ps5 doesn't, don't be surprised. sony abandoned the cutting edge with the ps3.

I mean I was there and suffered hard with the drought of PS3 games. Sony didn't have to autism out again, I just wish there was still some identity with the consoles and no one really cares about the hardware other than nerds of course it just makes me think
