>Hollow Knight
peak of the genre
>Ori and the Blind Forest
not much of a "metroid-like", but incredible movement, incredible visuals, incredible music, escape sequences. Tied for my favorite with HK
>Blasphemous
real cool game but pretty flawed, combat and a lot of its mechanics like generic estus flask can be quite stale in particular with some low lows

i disrespectfuly disagree

try out Environmental Station Alpha, by the same guy that made Baba Is You and Noita. It looked cheap and ugly at first, but as i got used to the graphics the atmosphere got better and better, and it ended up being some real vast kino

Wisps does have some damn tight platforming, I’ll give you that. Shame about the combat being mostly nonexistent though. Feels like it leans way more into precision platformer than metroidvania, but if that’s your thing then yeah, could see how you'd rank it higher. Still, I’ll take the somber vibes and interconnectivity of HK over Ori's sparkly sadness any day.

did you mix up Blind Forest and Wisps? Wisps is the more combat-focused second game that downgrades the platforming for combat
With that said, i think middle-lategame blind forest is an interesting form of combat-ish where youre more into knocking enemies into environmentals, using them for platforming or reflecting projectiles, its definitely my thing
>Still, I’ll take the somber vibes and interconnectivity of HK over Ori's sparkly sadness
both are my all time favorites, but a game akin to Blind Forest or Will of the Wisps with the level of HK's interconnectivity/nonlinearity and actually good combat would be incredible

I played blind forest again right after wisps, but enjoyed wisps more (especially regarding pacing, as I dropped blind forest on release before getting bash, and didn't retry until the GMTK video)
ESA is good. I like the OST.

Not saying it's better than Hollow Knight. I'd need to replay Hollow Knight to compare (was waiting for Silksong which should be out before September 18)
For me, it's Super Metroid.

>I'd need to replay Hollow Knight to compare
different qualities overall, though id say HK is outright better in specifically everything that WotW has of "too similar" to HK
>HK charms are great if imbalanced and too much towards the generic options. WOTW has a few great shards like Deflection and Catalyst but majority of options are generic or extremely superfluous, and its just not as balanced/deliberate overall
>HK's best boss movesets are the coolest and most dynamic in the comparable genre. WOTW has a great moveset for bosses, but they are so slow and anemic for the most part that it outright wastes the potential of ori's actions
>WOTW has a really boring healing mechanic and you just farm respawning energy shards for the energy during the main fights, in HK the soul mechanic is real good
>WotW progression is unbalanced as shit, you end up stupidly tanky in lategame and it compounds with the healing mechanic. HK is a much more satisfying progression all the way to the end of the game specially because of route variety

Then afterwards it boils down to what you value the most
>do you want fancy movement, or do you want much more skillful stuff to do with the movement during combat
>how much do you care about a very vast nonlinear/interconnected world as opposed to a more railroaded one
>do you prefer fancy graphics or do you prefer the world to be a coherent civilization
etc
