Do you really think that no other publisher would have released on online storefront during the time where it was becoming more and more common for games to have ridiculous DRM, accounts and launchers?
Valve isn't perfect, but they set a minimum standard.

Steam by default provides minimally invasive and easily bypassed DRM, that isn't even mandatory, everything beyond that is at the discretion of the gay publisher who needs DRM to convince the shareholders.
If I buy a game on Steam, the files are located on my computer and are at my complete discretion, the only way it could be better is if they banned the use of additional DRM altogether like GOG.
If I rent shit from Microsoft, then it gets isolated in the Microsoft store cuckbox that I have significantly less administrative control over, despite it being my computer.

A lot of games especially older ones are best played on PC though.
