Dark Energy was abandoned, that's all there is to it.
All of ME's potential is in bringing back the old squadmates for updates models, so you can do more porn.

will I ever get to go on space adventures with my waifu Tali? probably not, but it's better than having them dig up the corpse of a good space opera franchise just to ruin it some more
having replayed the trilogy a handful of times I've come to terms with ME being a well designed dating sim with a tacked on TPS (even though the MP was god tier) and that makes it almost impossible to recreate or recapture that spark because very few of the people who actually worked on it really knew what they were doing (mostly the squad interactions and the codex writers)
