I remember playing this on one of those demo discs as a kid. Did you ever play picrel, anon? It's a pretty good space combat sim. I remember it the most from that time because it was so big it had to be split across 2 or 3 discs, and there were multiple endings and mission pathways.

Also fun fact- It's basically the only adaptation of GitS that's based on the manga's style and humor, with the exception of the new anime that's in the works.

i wouldn't say "nothing else comes close" but the ps2 fat was really ahead of it's time, to the point where to this day i have one on my desk fully pimped out. i'm talking shell swapped japan esxclusive zen black colorway with NA internals, original expansion bay modded to support SATA, fmcb memory card with the special version of OPL that lets you run large capacity drives and supports ps2 isos above 4GB without needed to convert them allowing for drag and drop. all of that combined let's me play any ps2, ps1, snes, nes, gba, gb, tbgfx etc, game either over ethernet or from the SSD, and be able to play them online multiplayer still to this day. obviously not many people online ever but you can still get some online multiplayer with nfs underground or bf2mc. ilink port can be used for some interesting stuff too. not to mention random shit they had for this system like the eyecam thing to scan your face (xbox later made the greatest version of that technology to date with the kinect)
>>714954448
good thing you could play all of them on the ps2
>>714954369
wrong, the psp and ps3 are both really great consoles. it didn't have nearly as much SOVL as the ps2 but the blueray player, and free online multiplayer combined with the backwards compatibility with the ps1 and ps2 cement it as a very very great console. so definitely can't say the ps2 was their last good one, even if it is their best imo.

Are you running your PS2 with exFAT that I've hear about so you can just slap your games in and call it a day or are you using the standard PS2 hard disk format where you basically need to partition every game? It's been a while since I looked into this but I was thinking of switching to the former though I like being able to boot fmbc from hard disk in case I lose a memory card especially since I take it with me places sometimes.

yes, i'm using exFAT and a 4TB SSD, but I'm using the OEM expansion bay and not the newer preconverted chink ones you can get. i mean, i do have one of those too for my backup ps2, but it's nowhere near as good as the OEM expansion bay as it has an ethernet port, which opens up an extreme amount of options, like playing games over ethernet via NAS. however it only supported IDE drives originally, so there is a custom ribbon cable and board you can swap in for SATA support, and the use of SSDs.
previously before the grimdoomer version of OPL you had to partition each game, and had to split up games that were larger than 4GB, of which many of the best games are, so it was tedious. this version of OPL allows the use of drives larger than 2TB and allows for dragging and dropping. it's 1000x better, the old way was extremely slow, and tedious. you can boot freemcboot from a usb drive as well iirc, i prefer memory card though, it pretty much never leaves the console, but it's cheap to replace or make a new one if you lose it, but yeah, you probably could even just partition the drive in such a way as to allow you to both boot freemcboot AND have a different partition for the games.
i forgot to mention in my initial post that i also replaced the stock fan with a noctua. combining that with the SSD and not really ever using discs much, it's superbly quiet.

I set up the PSBBN mod personally which makes for a cooler interface, but it does boot slower with the max 2 TB drive they allow. Not a huge deal, though, because I'm usually playing for hours at a time anyways.
I don't know if you've already got one, but you should check out the MemCard Pro 2. It automatically recognizes the games you play and makes a whole memory card for each separate game. Plus a bunch of other fancy shit like syncing to the cloud, accessing it over a web interface, drag and drop shit to the microSD, etc., and it also supports PS1 games.
The coolest thing with it, though, is setting up a default memory card to load into FreeMcBoot and then having it auto switch to the game's memory card when you load into it, so you don't need a dedicated FMCB memory card anymore.

sounds really interesting, i can maybe live with 2TB max as currently, i'm not actually filling up more than that, but i really don't want to go back to converting my games with WinHiip but i'm definitely going to look into that mod because it seems super cool otherwise, might be exactly what the other anon needs since he doesn't want to lose a memory card with fmcb on it

Yeah, you can, but it takes up a little space and it's only really reliable on standard 8 MB cards. This way you never have to worry about managing storage, and it's just simpler to only have the one memory card inserted because sometimes games don't let you save to one in the second slot.

Yeah, there are other microSD memcard options. I used to have a list of all of them, but I don't right now. If you want the GameID auto-switching I think the only other alternative right now is SD2PSX which should be a fair bit cheaper since it's open-source. The others like MX4SIO will work for loading games and stuff, though.

I've saved to a FMCB card, and it's worked just fine. It's possible if somehow a game corrupts your memory card it would ruin the FMCB installation on there, but if you use a microSD card that sets up new memory cards for each game that would side-step that, too, I suppose.

i do, and i'm no stranger to pain in the ass homebrew shit. i have heavily brewed Wii units too, that was my main thing before going down the PS2 brewing rabbit hole. what's funny is that frankly, emulation is superior in a lot of ways for most games that i would play on my ps2, but it is a fraction of the soul, and as a result way less engaging, and in a lot of ways this console has only gotten better with time thanks to advances in modding and what sort of things we are spoiled with now, like being able to use a dualshock 4 with the ps2 8bitdo adapter, noctua fans that fit, third party sata adapter kit, etc.
>>714958320
i've got a whole random assortment of mem cards including the mx4sio but desu i dont mind using the small 8mb ones too, that original feeling of precious save data encased within.
>>714958549
yeah the ps3 did it best too, although the Wii did have a browser too, which i used religiously for.. things.. the ps3 though just did it all man. how anyone can say that's not a great console is beyond me. it might be ugly as sin, and loud as balls, and an overheating behemoth, but that's a small price to pay for what it was providing on the screen, and so what if it got worse with every iteration, that's just sony's style re: ps2 slim, only this time they learned that instead of a shitty flip tray for the discs they should have a shitty sliding tray, which was actually kind of smart. but man, from the ps2-ps3-psp sony was kino.
