Elden Ring forgot what Souls was really about.

Dark Souls was about knowing how to do things and was never a hard action game. I would argue Demon Souls was even more pure with its gimmicky bosses.

Not to say you can't cheese ER though that feels more like unintended exploits.

The parry timing in ds1 is almost to lenient, but every other game (except bloodborne) has insanely precise timing to the point parrying just isn't worth trying unless you spend a good amount of times and deaths practicing on each different enemy

dark souls is all about muscle memory and pattern memorization. it is basically chess with swords and monsters.
enemies will always spawn in certain locations, react to certain stimuli, attack in the same ways, and drop the same things. you're no hardcore gamer if you beat dark souls, after two or three playthroughs it becomes as easy as breathing.

It wasn't slopified yet, the slopification began with the DLC and culminated with Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. DS3 was the point of no return, but as soon as DS1 exploded and they realized they could market it as the "HARD GAME FOR HARDCORE GAMERS" it was over.
No one was impressed by Dark Souls and Demon's Souls for their combat, the games were recognized for other reasons. It's really a shame how commercial success destroys creative freedom rather than enhancing it.

The level / map design is amazing. The bosses are easy as shit. The game is clunky as fuck, sometimes in a very annoying way. Second half isn't as good as the first one. Anor Londo looks unfinished and ugly.

I think culturally it took off because it didn't have a difficulty option and the combat was rather simple on its own. It was just the game, and you could either dig through gamefaqs or whatever to find the cheesiest strats or unironically just git gud and learn how to game the AI. There weren't wikis and step by step videos with no-hit guide runs on youtube by well-renown dark souls youtube autists with le trustable guides stamped and approved by the appropriate youtuber at that point, people still sorta had to mostly figure out video games by themselves. There are other reasons for why it was more popular and known for its difficulty than something like NG or DMC but that's just a few, I could go on.

Every game after ds1 fucked up the parry windows massively by artificially delaying the initial frames to make it non intuitive. Ds2 and 3 have the absolute worst windows. Elden ring parries are pretty close to ds1 all things considered, but the enemies are spastic over tuned fags sp it doesn't matter really

Souls games are 95% knowledge checks. Once you know where all the items are, the games are trivial. And boss patterns are pretty basic too, especially in older games.

In Cuphead you die in 3 hits, you can't heal, bosses have 3-5 phases.

The game doesn't explain anything, there's virtually no tutorial, you only know wtf is weapon scaling, equip weight, light/heavy rolls etc because you've already played the later games. There's even shit like Firekeeper Souls saying "improves Estus healing" in the description, so you use the souls lmao and nothing happens because you're actually supposed to give these to an NPC, but how tf would you know without guides?

But yeah, actual reflexes wise, it's a rather easy game, assuming your build is not fatrolling and you have at least 5 flasks.

cuphead has piles of pattern recognition and gotchas
if you want challenge that cant just be memorized its the very lategame of pic related. Prime bosses fall prey to it, but gauntlets like P-2 or the final boss of 1-E are practically impossible to "just memorize" unless you discover a hyper specific cheese method
