He's not really evil, just kind of an asshole. He's a good ruler who maintains loyalty in his subjects despite frequent retarded schemes to kidnap and marry his oneitis that involve mobilizing his kingdom's entire forces. It's literally NEVER once worked, but his subjects remain loyal regardless, so he's doing something right.

Almost certainly not, because the RPG titles have frequently shown that his subjects could and would overthrow him if they lost their genuine loyalty.

I wish the movie better integrated the power ups and ? blocks into the setting because the way it was done ended up making them feel disjointed.

He's evil because he's incredibly selfish and will screw over anyone who gets in the way of what he wants. Sometimes what he wants IS to screw someone over, and he's got the power to do that. That said, you aren't necessarily supposed to dislike him.

You shouldn't! Bowser is a likeable character through and through and it's always a joy whenever he has a prevalent role beyond 'final boss'
Mind you, Bowser has his own kingdom (or share of land) and most of his subjects are truly loyal to him (to the point of needing brainwashing to make them go against their king). So yes, just because he is the badguy doesn't mean he is a bad guy.
