It was rushed but the glitches and oddities that came from that only make it more fascinating and fucked up to explore. Wonderful game, definitely the precursor to Banjo-Tooie in a lot of ways.

I hope so. It'll make my dad really happy because we used to play N64 together all the time, and this is my favorite. He's planning to buy a Switch 2 because of all the older games included in NSO. He asked me if DK64 was on there, and I told him not yet but they're always adding more. He's excited to play Banjo-Kazooie again though. I already ordered him an N64 controller for when he gets his console.

It's not BAD, but it certainly isn't nearly as fun as the DKC games. Not only is it slow, but it has a heavy handed use of bonus games and the collection gets tedious towards the end. The bosses also aren't nearly as fun, too easy compared to other games even in the same genre. Imagine having to play fucking Rocket Ship AND DK Arcade to fight against the final boss. Makes me want to puke before going back and playing it again.

You're supposed to keep clocking him with the basic three-punch combo as fast as you can. I had the same problem originally, couldn't figure it out either.
The following level is possibly the worst one in the game.

When the boss stomps on the stage and the platform starts sinking, it's faster and more time efficient to do a bunch of basic 3 hit combos instead of winding up a couple primate punches. Ask any speedrunner and they'll say the swme. Damage output is weird in DK64. You can kill the Kasplats with the final hit of a second 3hit combo after stunning them normally. Google AI is full of shit also

the size is good. What's really the problem is it just kind of wastes your time.
There's two parts of the game: getting to the part of the level where you complete a challenge for a banana, and then the actual challenge.
The game pointlessly elongates the first part, for no real reason.
The actual challenges are pretty good on the whole. it really is the bloat that's the problem,

I disagree. A vast amount of the content was inputing some context-sensitive ability that doesn't actually do anything fun or interesting, just removes moves a roadblock. Wow, now I can... pull levers? Wow, now I have an... even stronger ground pound? Wow, now I have the ability to... shoot switches like everyone else? Yep, they all do more or less the same shit. It's a lot like a ubisoft game, spread a little content out as wide as possible to extend the playtime.

You fundamentally misunderstand the game. You get a banana medal for every 75 bananas. There's 100 bananas for each character. The most bananas you need to fight the boss is around 300. That webm highlights some very inefficient playing from an obsessive compulsive 100% gamer.

And I beat it at 101% completion.

You just did the bare minimum?

Do you... not like this game?

Best way to do Fungi Forest is to take each kong through a colored tunnel once. Pro tip is to scope an entire level out the best you can with an initial character.

dk64 has an explicit reward for 100% completion with the bonus post credits cutscene so saying you don't have to do it makes about as much sense as saying you can just noclip past bad levels in a video game to play the fun ones.

ie "sure, but I would rather the whole game was good instead of pretending otherwise"

Not him, but plenty of us had issues with the game back then. That sentiment just wasn't being amplified by shitty youtubers and retards who don't actually play games. I would never sit any child that I care about in front of DK64 when the game is practically shovelware compared to games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. Hell, the game is easily mogged by just about any 3D Mario game, and kids would probably rather sit in front of those games to begin with.

I'm actually playing through it for the first time right now. People say "it's only bad if you 100% it" like that one anon literally just did but I'm finding 100%ing it more enjoyable than just getting base completion, there are fewer colored bananas around so finding them feels better and there's less constant switching just to clean areas up.
Also forcing the player to beat two levels of OG arcade donkey kong just to get base completion for no reason other than just to filter thousands of toddlers is funny as fuck.

How about this, I want to see one of you genuinely, GENUINELY- try and defend that last 2 arcade coin gate right before the final boss.

the idea that, if you analyze or, especially, criticize any artwork it means that you're jaded and inherently hate it is so bizarre to me, i truly believe you can only think like this if you're extremely emotionally stunted or a woman (same thing)
critique of art is appreciation, it's deeply cultured and as old as time itself, but i wouldn't expect uncultured plebeian swine to understand

Genuine improvements to the game's core design:
-limit the amount of times you can switch between characters in each level before you have to come back way later
-add a map that shows the collectibles you've seen on it
-warp pads allow you to choose which warp you want to warp to, even across and between levels
-animal transformation uses crystal coconuts
-cutscene skip

This argument is like saying to just use efficient leveling in Oblivion. Yeah you could do it, maybe it makes the game a bit less tedious at the expense of being a bit more unintuitive and having to keep constant mental track, but why not just design the game to be fun in the first place?

Reviewers and journalists were whining about how there was too much shit to collect. To be fair it has a bunch of flaws. The barrel change system is clumsy. The rare coin and nintendo coin requirement halted the game to a standstill and should not have been a requirement to reach the final boss. Some minigames are absolute fucking dogshit. On some emulators even impossible because of the speed changes from hardware to emulation. I do have a soft spot for this game though. I have fond memories beating this game at the start of 3rd grade summer vacation
