I am 20 years too late for the party but I actually wanted to experience the game in person instead of watching it on 2nd screen like a zoomer.
I can't decide if Asura's Wrath is some elaborate shitpost, a gigantic homage or if the producers were serious.
The gameplay is almost nonexistent and whatever little there is is serviceable.
But the QTE's actually work and tend to impact whatever is happening on the screen and somehow every QTE here is extra satisfying.
They fucking hired Studio 4C to make fully hand-drawn DLC episodes - a glorified AMV where failing QTE changes the clip, Time Gal-like. And the interludes were drawn by some really great and known artists which seem to be hired only to draw few pages.
There's at least one Itano circus scene with the same camera angles, missile spread, same dodging action.
The choreography in the cutscenes is amazing, I'm impressed how expressive the characters are and how nicely the combat scenes are constructed. Getting pinned to the ground by a planet-sized sword while Dvorak plays in the background was my favorite so far.
But the cutscenes range from good to so ridiculously over the top and so fucking campy (especially after teaming up with Yasha) that I start to believe this all is a very expensive shitpost.

Also somehow the whole internet doesn't have a single artwork from Kaori Nishimura even if they were in the industry since Parodius. This POW box has to be a reference to something.

I think it's mostly an issue of "too many words without any direction for a thread". you've mostly just made a bunch of simple statements without really giving your own opinion one way or the other. sure you "start to believe this is all a very expensive shitpost", but did you LIKE it? you'd probably get more responses even with just a simple "what did you guys think?" at the end

cc2 is just a developer for hire, they don't have any control over what happens to the games they make (well, other than fuga now). the president gets asked about rereleasing solatorobo or asura's wrath or making new .hack games all the time, and his answer is always "we'd love to, but bamco/capcom own those and they don't want to do anything with them"

the litter tail bronx series is pretty good if you're not one of those kinds of people who scream bloody murder if they see furry characters. tail concerto is a ps1 game and it's short and pretty basic but still kinda fun. solatorobo on the ds is where it really takes off though, and now they've got the 3 fuga games on steam

I love GU and I'm glad we got a remaster, but I really want a patch that adds a new difficulty that lowers damage and exp gain.
The remaster made it so you are always over leveled by just doing the story missions while also buffing everything the player can do. They already added a cheat mode they didn't need to make the base game this easy

i personally think it's unfair to compare AW to a normal action game and judge it for its lack of gameplay, because you end up missing both the specific context at the time it was released, and also the specific and very deliberate intentions of its creators
this game was created to be a cinematic super stylish epic of God tier fight after fight, with clear inspirations from the god of war cutscenes but taken to its natural extremes
it's arguably closer to a 3D CGI shounen anime, and a damn fine one at that, kind of a genre on its own because of the added interactivity from the gaming medium
i'm not saying the game was a masterpiece, there are and were plenty of legitimate complaints about it, like the ending being separate paid dlc, but people shouldn't just dismiss it as "qte moviegaem lol", because they end up missing out on what was arguably one of the coolest experiences at the time, kind of a time capsule really.
it was back when stuff like ttgl was in vogue, so having shit like punching the ground really hard and half a continent cracks, and then a fucking planet sized titan tries to squash things with a finger, it was fucking peak.

Asura's wrath is the best shitty game ever if that makes sense
The actual game itself is one of the worst I've ever played and can probably be removed and nothing I like about the game would change. The cutscenes and the story are so good I still think about it to this day, it told the "gods are actually really shitty beings" story far better than anything else and nothing has really topped it
https://youtu.be/3Smf5rC9MFo?t=449
and this scene lives rent free in my head, not even his actual daughter but he's just tired of all the gods' bullshit at this point and goes berserk
actual kino

well GU games was easy even on ps2, if you even 1-2 level higher than enemy than your damage is lot higher than needed, not saying about like 5 levels, then you oneshotted bosses. only way to somehow enjoy it was to be underleveled.
