Imagine if their ears were on the top of their head, it would leave a lot of blank space. Since a lot of furry designs, especially eastern ones, like to stick snouts on human faces they have the same problem like Pulchra and Lycon form ZZZ who have a human shape but with a snout tacked on.

One way to make it less obvious is what you suggest and also make the eyes bigger. Or do like the Elder Scrolls and just give them straight up cat heads.
