i rewatched the anime earlier this year and that's how i felt. desu the more the drama built the shittier it gets. fun cast and cool idea that does work, but the character drama/writing gets pretty dumb later.
it does have one of the best girls though in anime/vidya.

I also rewatched it recently, with someone who hasn't, and I realized just how dated the show was. All of the humor landed for me still, but it completely missed its mark on him, because he just wasn't on the internet during that time.

Use a guide, it's meant to be a linear story but the true ending can be easily missed early on. There aren't any real "routes", the different endings are more or less glorified bad ends
