This is why you lose. Simple killboxes can help you in the early game but as you progress you need more active defenses. Staging areas, effective trap use, funneling and tunneling, and movement control become far more important than a killbox, especially when you have more dlc (which have more raids that don't care about your box).

Stop relying on a shitty mortar and 2 defense turrets to stop 200 tribals.

You should eat nutrient paste instead of cooking meals at the start, freeing up one colonist from cooking makes a massive difference at the start when so many things need to be estabilished, the -4 mood debuff is well worth it
Once you're settled in and the initial mood buff wears off, you can start cooking again

this is cover for two shooters, and you can fight 3v1 melee in the door choke with your own shooters behind without a ton of enemies shooting at you
mechs and bugs can be baited through traps along a path
ship piece mechs won't leave the ship piece, so you can pick at them from range and retreat

There's a whole lot to research, use to strengthen your colony.
From xenogenes to bionics to farming high quality weapons. Make drugs, sleep accelerators, neural superchargers, capture prisoners to genetically augment your colonists, use psychic rituals to make your colonists younger, steal experience, brainwash enemies and so on.
If you're just playing vanilla Rimworld with 0 mods and DLC's, then it's a valid complaint, but there's a million mods and a bunch of feature dense DLC's for you to use, if you want to.

just go through the most popular mods on the workshop, add whatever you like and try them out
about the colonist thing, if you're playing with all DLC's, you can get like 20 colonists easily.
Shock lances, skip abduction, brainwipe, just normal recruitment, growth vats all make it fairly easy

From the looks of it camps generate small resourceless maps so it shouldn't be blocking either colonies or anything else, no idea.

Killboxes aren't necessary. I'd offer you some examples, but they'd be streamers and Youtubers and honestly, you'd wouldn't watch. I'd say what's more necessary are the psychic powers that come with Royalty. Beserk pulsing the guy with the triple rocket launcher coming at you really helps to thin those giant raids out.
