Microsoft isn't gonna sell them to Nintendo because Nintendo doesn't buy studios just because.
Nintendo doesn't hate Rare or hold anything against them but buying back Rare themselves would be a waste and I mean no disrespect.
Nobody from the Nintendo days are still there, they have no connections or understanding of the current staff unlike Next Level Games whom they had a multi generation long history before buying outright, they're not interested in live-service games so Sea of Thieves wouldn't be of any interest to them, and Everwild went nowhere.
Not a good look especially if the value is still too expensive.
But does Nintendo have an incentive or logical reason to acquire their IPs in-specific?
Yeah but not in a way one would romanticize
They don't have teams available right now who'd want to handle Banjo-Kazooie, Perfect Dark, etc and Rare themselves aren't interested.
The only pragmatic reason Nintendo would be interested would be if they wanted to secure Rare's backlog of games to prevent long-term negotiation fees to re-release titles like DK64 or Diddy Kong Racing but even if Microsoft is selling and a potential outside buyer could be harder to negotiate with, Nintendo would likely rather choose to negotiate with the new owner instead of paying for the rights as a whole.

IMAGINE being Gregg Mayles

>Make industry-shaking smash hits
>Bring Donkey Kong back from the dead into a household name
>Revolutionize 3D platforming
>Save the N64 literally
>Make ONE flop for your entire career (Nuts and Bolts)
>Your entire fanbase turns on you
>Microsoft fires everyone at Rare and you make Kinect shit while your friends make another Banjo like game without you
>Years later Nintendo literally steals the ideas from that same flop for their flagship series and everyone LOVES it
>Flounder at Rare, get your new project cancelled
>Retire in obscurity
I mean he had several chances to make Banjo 3...

Mayles retiring means nothing at worst and could even be a good thing. The dude refused to work on any of their IPs unless he could "revolutionize" it, yet they haven't done anything new either. They've been doing nothing but fucking Sea of Thieves for a decade.

>715030687
>negotiation fees to re-release titles like DK64 or Diddy Kong Racing
Nintendo has all rights to anything and everything Donkey Kong. We've already seen DK64 on the Virtual Console. Diddy Kong Racing is probably questionable though, having Banjo and Conker and also being published by Rare themselves.

Anon, for the situation to happen
>Sea of Thieves would have to longer be seen as profitable
>Microsoft is secretly discussing negotiating Rare's IPs to Nintendo
>They cancelled Everwild to prepare shutting down Rare (and also because it was in development Hell)
>Perfect Dark got cancelled because it's also a Rare IP (aside from being in development Hell)
>Rare goes bust and Sea of Thieves shuts down
>Microsoft sells the entire Rare IP catalog to Nintendo who for some reason agrees to pay presumably millions of dollars for them even though they have no resources available to support one let alone all of them
>Microsoft uses the money for other projects (probably AI)
You'd have to create an elaborate conspiracy for that to be plausible

Microsoft outbid them
The Stampers approached Nintendo first but they weren't interested so they open themselves to be bought out by whoever
Nintendo didn't go for Rare because their output diminished hard during the last years of their partnership having missed multiple deadlines and they were moving away from foreign devs in favor of collaborating with domestic
They sold their minority stake in Rare and used that money for other projects

Shame, if the N64 had actually achieved even ONE modicum of success, I could see Nintendo bothering to purchase Rare for the N64 backlog for a Virtual Console or Rare Replay Switch release, maybe even bankrolling some new games with Rare IP like Viva Pinata

Unfortunately, none of that happened and Rare is going to shrivel and Nintendo will release half baked slop for 80 dollars that you WILL buy

It's their chill hang out game and they don't even care the new season had nothing new . Just rehashed ideas/

Rare or what's left of it will be stuck in the SoT mines until the whales eventually became bored and move onto the next thing that can replace SoT. I thought wildgate was gonna be it but no.

Because old 90s boomers are coping hard to see Banjo and Conker return after so long to proper form. They'll imagine any crazy scenario that allows it to happen even though Nintendo doesn't really give a shit and Microsoft just wants Rare to either work on Sea of Thieves, or they'll find them work on other stuff.

Remember, before they finally were able to do Sea of Thieves, they were stuck doing Xbox Miis or whatever they were called during the 2000s.

At the time Nintendo was weak and microsoft was seeking to dominate the market Nintendo wasn't going for. It was basically microsoft and sony vs each other with nintendo making "microsony at home (literally they even finally upgraded to discs and the only reason they did it is because sony wouldnt profit off it) type console and games. Microsoft and sony were pushing genuine innovations in gaming and Iwata was trying to keep up with Reggie's salesmanship. Hiroshi had to come back to bail them out with Wii/DS and Iwata almost killed that too.

>>715034757
They were "independent" until Microsoft. Really they would bend and do whatever asked for the money, which in the case of microsoft was "do nothing because we have halo and CoD, also here's some money for a new building". All they had to do was put up rainbow flags.

>Does anyone actually care?
Honestly I just wanted to see them make a new game because frankly a lot of the infamy of the Microsoft era came from four things
A. Their initial games post-buyout being changed drastically due to development issues during the transition
B. Rare not making sequels people wanted out of their own choice
C. Kinect
Rare weren't bad devs even during the Xbox era, they just couldn't live up to their creative peak when game development was still cheaper and they could have multiple teams on multiple projects releasing projects at a break neck pace.
Sea of Thieves wasn't interesting to me because I don't care for live service games but Everwild seemed like a solid step in the right direction, something that could finally remind people that Rare still "got" it.

I don't think they'll just say the game is ending cause that'd just be rubbing salt on the wound and Microsoft would be tone deaf to let that slide

Microsoft is just gonna keep licensing Banjo to Nintendo for Smash for the inevitable future.
cause we all know that even if Nintendo did buy Rare back in the day or buy them now, they aren't gonna do shit with Rare's IP.
they'll just sit on them like what Microsoft is doing now.
and thanks to the mario mandate, they won't ever have Banjo or Conker appear in any DK games even if Diddy were in them.
even if there were a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing, they'll be excluded

I was into what they showed in the trailer but they didn't get anything but the trailer done in 10 years so yeah good riddance to everyone who "worked" on that and the director that was allowed to "leave on his own terms" for his continued failure.
At least Sea of Thieves is good and keeps running.

It's the ancient fanfic scrolls, anon. Passed down through GameFAQs forums and deviantArt prophecies. According to legend, once Rare reboots Twelve Tales, the Holy Trinity of 90s mascots-Banjo, Conker, and Diddy-will reunite to bring balance to the IP wars. Only then will the Great Revival patch be released.

Reminder that Iwata killed the power Nintendo of America had in the 90s.

From 1990-2000. Nintendo of America had production and management autonomy from Japan. NOA basically culminated its own production team, along a few co-designers, and started funding and producing games with developers.

>DMA Design: Uni Racers, Body Harvest (Nintendo dropped it in 1997, Midway took it)
>Angel Studios: Ken Griffey Baseball, Buggie Boogie (canceled)
>Bits Studios: Warlocked, Riqa (canceled)
>Rare: Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark
>Software Creations: Ken Griffey Baseball, Tin Star
>Silicon Knights: Eternal Darkness (N64 version)
>Left Field Productions: Kobey Bryant in NBA Courtside, Excitebike 64
>Looking Glass Studio: Mini Racers (canceled)
>Mass Media: Star Craft 64
>H20: Tetrisphere
>Saffire Corp: Nester's Funky Bowling, James Bond 007
>DIC: Super Mario Bros cartoons, Legend of Zelda, Captain N: The Game Master
>Midway: Cruisn Series

Nintendo of America also procured the Ken Griffey and MLBPA license, NHL License, Kobe Bryant and NBA license, PGA license, Disney license, James Bond license, StarCraft license. Star Wars Episode I license. They were producing their own first-party games separate from Nintendo of Japan.

That all changed when Iwata transitioned from Global Marketing Chief to President. NOA Production was killed, and Nintendo of Japan's SPD Department took over all Western development (Star Fox Adventures, Geist, Eternal Darkness GC).

Henry Sterchi, Brian Ullrich, Ken Lobb, Ed Ridgeway, Jeff Hutt, Faran Thomason, and the whole crew left NOA to Microsoft and other developers. Since then, we've seen the Western model we have today. Western developers reporting directly to Japanese management, and pretty much making B/C sequels to Nintendo IPs.

Nintendo doesn't need any of Rare's shit.

>Splatoon is a shooter that is bigger than Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini and Goldeneye combined.

>Mario Kart is infinitely bigger than Diddy Kong Racing.

>Mario is infinitely bigger than Banjo.

I'm 100% sure if you ask anyone at Nintendo in Japan who Rare is, they will say, "Who the fuck is that"?
