we never called it that
it was just "the playstation/ps" until ps2 came out
then it was the ps1

it was never ps1. ps1 directly implies there was already an understanding of a ps2 on the release of "ps1" and no previous major console was even differentiated by 1, 2, 3, 4, (...) and definitely not on it's first iteration

it was PSX from 1994 to 2000, wqhen they released PSOne trying to adapt it for their upcoming naming scheme because ps2 was already in development.
i suspect it was always the long term plan to have them called ps1 ps2 ps3 etc and the project itself was called PSX (X being numerical value) but some exec thought it looked cool so they had to go on with it.
there was a talk around then about it and people asked "what the X stands for" jokingly.
there is still no reason to call it ps1 tho. just use psx and everyone will know what you talk about without confusing it with psone.

Yes?

Literally all of us called it the PSX when referring to it, I literally started on playstation with Tekken 1. Playstation was never called Playstation One until the literal PS1 came out.

Then once that exists people called the original PS the PSX to be more clear.

Repost the same jpegs again. This wasn't part of the discourse among 90% of people. You had to pick up one of these mags which I guarantee the majority of buyers didn't. There's no indication to the kid playing games on his console that it's called PS"""X"""". It's not culturally relevant. After PS2 came out that sealed PS1 as the way to refer to the console.

No. This is not the environment we came up into in the mid 90s. We read magazines where abbreviations were used for consoles as a standard reaching farther back than the NES and the PSX is just what it was fucking called everywhere. It was the hyperlink to see news on websites like Happypuppy.com, it was what magazines called it. It was just the name for it because 3 letter abbreviations are a defacto standard.

Sony dropped the PSX code name as soon as the real name was revealed.

Magazines called it that whenever it was abbreviated. Never knew why exactly, but I assumed it was so that game release lists were formatted more neatly. N64 and PSX could take up the same space in the column that way. Pretty sure the Saturn and Game Boy were abbreviated STN and NGB. Not sure how that would have worked for the previous console generation, I don't remember that far back as clearly.
