'You get access to a bunch of drunken sailors who spend money irresponsibly'

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/knowing-steam-players-are-hoarders-explains-why-you-give-valve-that-30-percent-analyst-tells-devs-you-get-access-to-a-bunch-of-drunken-sailors-who-spend-money-irresponsibly/

>Hold up folks: games industry analyst Chris Zukowski has cracked it, and knows exactly what you're all like. Nothing but a bunch of hoardy hoarders! Yes I'm looking at YOU with your huge Steam library, bulked-out greedily during every big sale, and which you've only ever played half of (and that's being generous). The truth… is in there.

>"The amazing thing about Steam and its player base is that they buy games they aren’t going to play," says Zukowski in a new post (first spotted by GR+). "More than likely the person buying your game is not going to play it."

>I resemble that remark. Zukowski conjures up the spirit of Reed Hastings, the co-founder of Netflix, and specifically his remarks that the streaming platform isn't just competing with the likes of HBO, but also things like Fortnite and, in the extreme cases where you get hooked on a box set and it's past 1 am, sleep. In such a scenario, what chance does a poor little indie game have of snatching an hour?

50% of my total playtime is on 1 old game that cost like 10 bucks. I buy maybe 1-2 new games a year and either refund or finish them.

sounds like you're mad that you didn't make a storefront full of games that people want to buy but not play

It's the Netflix model. I honestly thing Netflix could also get away with purchasing movies and tv shows as well on top of the subscription model. Just do it for a select few shows that come and go with the service, and have sales to go along with it. Add a feature where you can gift purchases to subscribers that person knows or randomly. Just combine Netflix model with Steam model and all their features and you've got an ultiamte streaming and digital purchasing storefront on hand.

that wouldn't work because netflix buys the license to stream series that aren't exclusive for their platform, every other month a bunch of movies and series get removed from the platform and you'd lose access to whatever you bought if its on that list

almost sure amazon is a better choice to buy movies and shows because you can buy whole dvd sets in there
