Fuck this stupid sword. It does roughly the same damage as the zweihander at the same upgrade level, it has bleed, is fast, and is upgraded with somber stones which are far easier to find.

I want to use a different weapon, preferably the zweihander, but this just seems flat out better. It feels like it would be stupid to use anything else.

Zweihander can do counter piercing charge attacks for big damage if you build around that. In general though you really can't go wrong with just big sword and the lions claw AoW. Don't worry about "optimal", pretty much every weapon can get a decent setup out of at least one of jump/charge/dual wield/aow attacks.

The real difficulty is only using one 2-hander

You can get a somber to +9 at the start of the game with no effort at all, hell the +8 and +9 stones are literally next to each other in upper Caelid, and then you can just do the Varre quest to get the +10 stone. Meanwhile you need to slowly grab 12 of each level of normal stone to progress slowly to +24, which gets a bit easier in the DLC complete with a free +25 stone, but you still need to pass the Mohg check for that.

No, that's not even remotely true even when you consider the cracked MV.
On a STR build it's outdamaged by more or less every other infusable CGS outside of the Monk's Flameblade, Freya's CGS in particular runs laps around it since BHF has a mere C in STR scaling at +10
On a DEX build it's one of the best options but not by far.
INT/FTH/ARC all have better options, Morgott's sword, Magma wyrm's etc.

+6 from the Liurnia bell bearing is fine into Leyndell. +12 is fine from Leyndell to Mountaintops, where you immediately get +18, and that's plenty to get you to Godskin Duo. If it weren't so easy for a clueless player to miss the bearings, I'd say they should've gated the upgrades behind them entirely, the game actually plays better like that. It's not like Dark Souls 1 where a +0 weapon is basically useless after Burg, you can do all of Limgrave and Weeping comfortably with one and even Caelid with some effort. The only place that it is easy to farm those is the Caelem Ruins in Caelid, where you kill the tanks and they drop 3 Stones with fairly good rates.

Fun fact: Siluria's Woe is technically a weapon attack, not a true projectile.
That means that, despite looking like a pure holy attack, it's actually dealing the same damage types as the base weapon (i.e. mostly physical, the best "element" type in the game).

The system itself is fine. Having a set of upgrade resources for Normal Weapons Vs. BigFuckAss Boss Weapons is a sound idea to curate progression for unique rewards and abilities.
The problem is the system will bizarrely apply to weapons that don't fit the boss reward theme or vice versa.
It makes first playthroughs confusing and tricks you into wasting resources on shit you didn't know would eventually suck.
Couple that with how insanely rare it is to find GOOD stones until you get well past the point you need them and it makes the wholes system feel needlessly tedious on repeat playthroughs when you just want a weapon to be as powerful as it can be for the progress you are at in the main quest.

Bloodhound's Fang is THE designated n00b weapon of Elden Ring. Every element of the weapon, from its weapon class, to being upgraded with somber smithing stones, to its requirements, to its placement in Limgrave is designed to make n00bs gravitate toward it like flies to honey. I did base game with a nearly pure faith flame build with a flame art knight greatsword and it worked really well. Get the Flame of the Fell God in Liurnia, it’s an underrated incant as you can just cast it and go back to melee as it homes in and explodes for good damage and a fiery aoe that can build stagger.

Cold's main damage still comes from physical scaling, so you want to pick str, dex, or quality to level evenly with int and then also pick weapons that have agreeable scaling by default. With Sacred Blade and some holy pots, you can go to Caelid and kill the Deathbird for Death's Poker sooner than you can find any cold ashes. It's even less of an int weapon than actual cold infusions are, so don't worry about leveling int much in the early game. When you get to Liurnia, stick to the eastern side and kill the Night Cavalry for Ice Spear. The Lucerne is also found along the way, it's a very good weapon to put that ash on. Otherwise you can run whatever spells you like, my early game favorites are Carian Slicer, Night Maiden's Mist, and Glintstone Stars. Lategame options are pretty obvious, you've got Dark Moon Greatsword, Helphen's Steeple, Royal Greatsword, plus all the other unique weapons with int requirements, even if they aren't strictly cold-inflicting you can still use them effectively and apply cold with spells instead. I haven't tried it myself, but I'm thinking it could also be good to put a little bit of investment into faith so you could use Gelmir sorceries to trap enemies in frostbite reset hell.

Soulsborne upgrade systems are retarded in general, they force you to marry a weapon and make it plain painful to experiment with anything else unless you go out of your way to check the wiki and see how the weapon would scale with upgrades
Upgrade stones should be key items like DS' embers, and before you say "but open world", you can hide multiple of the same key item across the map so you're bound to find one as you explore, and then make the others disappear, and don't say this would ruin subsequent playthroughs because you'd rush to get the same stones over and over because that already happens with the current game anyway

You’ll notice that weapons with exceptionally good scaling in STR or DEX will lose base damage when infused that way. EG a heavy infused brick hammer has less base damage than keen infused brick hammer, as to make its S scaling not too overpowered.

Guardian Sword Spear’s “A” Dex scaling it’s like 1% short of being “S”, but when you set it to Keen it doesn’t lose any base damage compared to Heavy. This makes it ridiculously strong. To point that Keen with 80 DEX does better than Quality with 80 STR + 80 DEX. Not even a tiny bit better either, like 40 AR better. No other weapon is like this. Quality with 80/80 ALWAYS beats 80 in one stat heavy or keen.

For fun, I played ER enough times that regular playthroughs were basically the same thing just with different particle effects. Going pure sword and board, with no upgrades to both weapons and flasks made it different enough to how I had to approach the fights. Still you can guess which fights were cancerous enough to make me reconsider. I'm talking base game only, I didn't buy the DLC so I won't comment on that side.

ER's version of Mirrah's probably going to be a quality weapon again like the Hollowslayer version in DS3, I'm not seeing them turning it into an ARC weapon, honestly I'm not seeing them giving ARC anything in this DLC outside of maybe a seal to boost Blood incantations that will most likely still be vastly inferior to the Dragon Communion seal, maybe they'll put some new ARC sorcery or another ARC incantation.
That said they've been extremely secretive about the stuff they'll add in Tarnished edition so I might be wrong, I do hope they fix the throwing knife class at least.

zweihander is still OK because it has a stab for thrust damage. you can get the ultra great sword without fighting anything too if you want.

Somber weapons in ER are just really strong in most cases. the grafted blade is also really good and makes the game even easier than a bloodhound fang build imo.

I hate how many times I can see an enemy but his little toe is obscured by a rock or something and lock-on decides that it just doesn't want to do its job today.
I usually play some kind of caster, and free aiming spells makes me want to die.
The levels generally being more open I think, is the greatest issue. DS1 was big on shoving you in corridors, where Elden Ring likes wider open areas where the lock-on has a better chance to give up.

One of my favorite weapons for low level invasions, its range is too much of a hindrance at higher levels. I don't have a good WebM of the R2 R1 true combo with it, but the Messmer axe is basically the same weapon.

The debuff is attached to a very good consumable that you can use at any time and get rid of the debuff, but interacting with her, the earlier the better, is also important for unlocking some major plotlines in the game.

There’s no diminishing returns on buff stacking.

Crab is x0.8 incoming physical damage, Negation physic is x0.85 incoming damage, golden vow is x0.9 incoming damage, black flames protection is x0.65 incoming physical damage. If you stack all these it just does all the effects one after another.

Incoming (physical) damage x 0.8 x 0.85 x 0.9 x 0.65 =0.398 AKA 60.2% negation, AKA 2.5x survivability. People are just fucking stupid and see 50% negation + 20% negation resulting in 60% instead of 70% and cry “DimiNISHINg rEtuRNS!!!!” because they don’t understand how multiplication works.

I was exclusively Bloodhound's Fang until I found this terrifying weapon. I repec'd to a bleed build and never looked back. The beauty is in the fact that the character looks innocent, almost plain, but within a blink of an eye I land three strikes, proc bleed, land three more strikes which removes half your health, and suddenly your absolute panic ensues. Eleonora's Poleblade with a pure bleed build and in the right hands is swiftly lethal.

The amount of regular smithing stones you need for every upgrade level is always an even number except for max level. Halving that amount would go a long way towards fixing normal upgrade path weapons, and is a very obvious solution, but from software never did it.
