Does HL2 deserve to get its dick sucked to its day?
Genuinely don't see why you should care about it today. Other then running on a dog shit pc and having facial animations, whats so good about it?
shooters have been blowing it out of the water, heck even games around its time id argue were better.
Its a linear hallway with sluggish shooting, basic platforming and dog shit puzzles. The story you get in game works, but theres not much to it other then how its presented, theres isnt that much character dialog. The setting is unique but there isnt enough verity through out the game.
The combat just straight up sucks ass, theres noting to the zombie and antlions and the combine are just spongy and un reactive. the combine ai is nice, but its just a spongy shooting gallery

I seriously cant think of anything but its presentation being good

So why tf do people still circle jerk the game? was it even that good when it came out?

your not allowed to not like the game and its fucking annoying

I think people are changing their mind about it more and more.
I prefer Half Life to HL2, I can't lie, I was wowed at the time by HL2's visuals and effects, and that swung it for a while. But playing them again since, Half Life just wins as a better game. Its not as bogged down as 2 is, particularly with its shit vehicle sections.
Half Life is the classic, 2's just a tech demo riding on its coattails

Then why is there no half assed port to any console past the 360?
only steam users are going around shitting their pants every time any one less then sucks its dick off

yet no one ever actually gives reasons its any fucking good

it almost feels like beetle "fans" who only listened to 2 albums throwing a fit any time some one says they dont give a shit about the beetles. they're more in love with being part of a group with "refined taste", when in reality they are the most plebeian bores on earth
except the beetles have lasting merit
hl2 didnt actually do anything new, it hardly did anything better

so why is a game with good presentation and mid and lackluster everything else held in such high regards?
nobody answers that because they dont even like hl2, its just some lame ass circle jerk group

defend any of the shit gameplay, you fucking cant, because theres nothing to say

Watch them defend this and tell you "you're just...le baaad" because you're using the shotgun wrong cause obviously it's supposed to not work; while stubbornly shooting at armored combine with the smg in hl2 from 50 feet away and blaming the game for having bullet sponge enemies. Ignoring the HL1 soldiers are way tankier and dont react to shit. At least HL2 has ragdolls to make the gunplay more entertaining than that.

people like the world and world building what could've been with the Beta stuff.
HL2 is definitely the highest highs and lowest lows of the series with some absolutely stellar design and world building but followed by some bad levels and a combat system that's in desperate need of an overhaul
It sucks too because there's a lot potential but the execution wasn't as good as HL1
I love the game to death though and Highway 17 always gives me a lot of comfy vibes, I replay it every year

Yea, the Gravity Gun is still immensely fun to use to this day and always provides you with options, it rewards you for being aware of your enviroment. When you get to the end of the game it lets you go fully wild with it and its the most fun you can have in a shooter.
>the vehicles
They're fine. Once you get to Episode 2 they've learned exactly how to use and structure vehicle segments, to the point where Episode 2 is genuinely the best part of the overall package and it has a shit ton of vehicle usage. Ironically, Episode 1 is the worst of it and somehow manages to be completely on foot.
>the shitty squad management
Its not really well fleshed out but its never an issue that holds the game back? It's more like a mecahnic that you just kind of ignore. You don't really need to care about it and the one time they "force" you to play with it (in episode 1) its all so braindead easy anyway, the hardest part being that sometimes you get rushed by Shotgun Combine while you protect civvies/resistance members.
>the ass antlion part
There's not a single ass antlion part in HL2.

>to this day im always getting stuck on NPC's in hallways
Maybe I haven't replayed the game enough and I'm lucky but I've never had the issue. I've had them be somewhat unresponsive if I've needed health or something though.
The way I've always seen the Gravity gun in the citadel is releasing the locks from it and giving you something entirely broken. As good as the Gravity gun is outside of the Citadel, you spend a lot of time in the streets with more conventional weapons, the Gravity gun around the middle of the game becomes a puzzle solver because you're joined up with the resistance and have more ammo and a wider variety of guns. That last level is essentially flipping the rug over to clean it like you have for years but never flipping it back over just because you think it suddenly looks better on the other side.

Episode 1 I totally understand the complaints for, opening is strong and then completely goes downhill with focus on HL2's weakest areas.

yeah maybe its due to replaying it too much. Wish someone would make a version of Hl2 that refreshes it for long time fans. People say Mmod does that but it really doesn't add a whole lot and some of that mod's design is highly questionable

Zoomer here, played for the first time this year. It's a 7 out of 10. Not bad, but it has too many annoying puzzles and gimmicks to be above that. Fear (2005) mogs it.

Nobody actually likes Half-Soi 2, it's just an "ironic" meme to pretend to like a slow generic hallway shooter set in a gray slav city with gay unskippable cutscenes wasting the player's time with a generic "aliens invade Earth" story.

>Fear (2005) mogs it
FEAR mogs most games. Master class in not wearing out your welcome.
Only weak part is the ghosts at the end being kind of lame.
HL2 actually has a lot of similarities to FEAR in its combat AI, but the combine's health and damage is too low to let it shine. Another anon mentioned modding it to help it out in that regard.
Really, maybe all it needs is a newly balanced difficult level.
I like HL2 though. It works best when the levels reward exploration imo. They should've went with a more open environment. But chalk that up to be a testers being retarded. Probably why the enemy health is nerfed too.

I love HL1 & 2, but compared to some other games the whole setting just kinda feels depressing and it can make the game offputting.
Everyone makes fun of brownwashed console shooters, but it feels like PC sure had its share of desolate feeling atmospheres.

Yeah I recently replayed both HLs and while HL2's forced "cutscenes" especially at the start aged worse, I think there's just a really great sense of pacing and progression to the games.

Replaying it with mmod and better combat encounter mods just elevate it further. Gravity gun is STILL kino qnd I would love to its modern rendition on a n engine that can handle even more physics shit.

I look at it like some sort of legacy game. HL was the true classic but HL2 certainly has it's merits. The problem is that so many games have copied HL's ideas ad nauseum so I can relate to anyone playing it now for the first time and judging it as "nothing special". But in it's time these physics based silly puzzles, driving/boating sections etc etc where all brand spanking fresh. The engine itself was a lot of fun to mess around with (no other reason Gmod was born), so it's the kinda game you have to judge in the spirit of the time of release. I still think they are worth playing if you are a younger anon that goes in with the right expections. The game is still interesting enough to hold it's own in current year. There's also something to be said for the episodes, which really are significantly better than the base game. Really focused, thightly knit experiences on those. And Alyx is a masterclass on how to write female support characters. Holds her own, both in gameplay and story but she's not without faults or weaknesses. Her little breakdowns and damsel in distress moments tend to make most players care for her.

HL doesn't have this "nothing special" problem, it still holds up incredibly well and hasn't really been outdone by any other FPS. Making it the true classic HL without a doubt.

I might not like HL2's gameplay but the story is fucking great. One of the few games where there seems to be something much bigger going on that's only hinted at
I suspect the reason hl2 ep3 never happened was that they could never write a satisfying ending. The combine is lovecraftian cosmic horror that the games barely show. Eli was right. epistle 3's ending is lame, a dyson sphere is the least the universe has to worry about

It has Atmosphere. But other than that it's just a butchered Beta: cool enemies cut, maps cut, physgun circumcised to a gravity gun, the world logic thrown to the trash.
And as a bonus the detalisation of the world is shit, it's always some empty boring cuboids with some physics trash inside. The first HL had WAY better maps.

My theory on why people are turning on HL2 is because they never delivered a HL3. The kind of game HL1 innovated on is now unfamiliar to newer players, so going back to it feels fresh. But for HL2 we still haven't moved on from that era of shooter so it feels like nothing new to players these days. Had HL3 come out and successfully pushed shooters in a different direction, players might look at HL2 the same way they look like HL1 today.

It was never good, no one played this shit back in the day when games like snake eater, metroid, pokemon, gta etc were out. PC fats seem to forget that pc was niche compared to consoles and handhelds back then. Simply put. The only people who praised this was pc fats who were starved of good games

Yes but only because of the story and technical feats for it's time, that's it.
>linear, combat is basic, puzzles are boring
Correct.
>So why tf do people still circle jerk the game? was it even that good when it came out?
Because the worldbuilding is great. Let me rephrase it in terms your generation understand. HL2 has hella aura and was goated for 2004.

People forget that Half-Life 2 was just a tech demo for CS:S, L4D, Portal and TF2. The only reason it was made was because of this. All the story is was to compensate how barebones is.

HL2 was a good game for the time but, just like Halo 2 the design decisions and gameplay systems would become commonplace in the industry over the next 10 years. This ubiquity of copies reflects poorly on the original if you forget that the originals practically invented the modern shooters.

It's great but it's not quite the phenom that the first one was. It was a technical marvel but in the long run it only ended up influencing the industry in superficial ways like everyone needing to put a "gravity gun" in their game for a while whereas the influence of Half-Life 1 is still felt everywhere today.
