They're trying to end physical media and people don't like that.

(made a small OP since long OPs tend to be ignored)
For me the cool thing about physical shit is being able to touch it, feel it, smell it. It's something tangible that actually feels like a purchase. For me a game purchased digitally or a pirated version feel the exact same, so physical is always preferable. But I don't really care whether the game is on the disc or not - either way it is going to exist within a physical medium - an SSD or Hard Drive.

The only argument I see is "muh preservation" but this is only a problem if you're a corpo cocksucker who cares about muh intellectual property rights and believes piracy is stealing (it isn't). Piracy already guarantees preservation so I struggle to understand this perspective. Especially when games haven't run off the disc since the PS3 era (excluding Nintendo systems).

With all that being said I would never purchase a "game key card" Switch 2 title for the simple fact that the warning banner looks aeful. It really is obnoxious. Keep that shit in the back. In fine print, please. No one actually wants to look at that crap lol. Then again I guess they're doing this for kids and parents.

What?
I'm just genuinely curious about why this matters. Storage is cheap. If for some reason the publisher manages to disable your ability to download a game YOU CAN JUST PIRATE IT.
The giant disgusting game key card banner on Switch 2 game boxes is a much bigger problem (who'd want to look at that?) than downloading a game yet no one is talking about it.

despite all the kvetching as you can see the majority of the games are complete on disc and don't require any downloads, physical is literally the same as it was 20 years ago aside from the fact that you need to install the game on the drive because blu ray speeds are simply not enough
you can enjoy your steam digital loicense icons or your 5TB ps1-ps2 roms folder on your desktop while I have all my vidya all my shelf that I can back up at any moment and continue playing on an emulator

People shouldn’t be allowed to own property. All it does it perpetuate a cycle of never ending greed where the advantaged, by birth, are about to take advantage of the disadvantaged a create a system of disparity that ensures that maintain their place in a rigid informal caste system

Read the thread lil' bro
Once again, this is only a problem if you believe in IP.
You can literally just download every single game (that doesn't have an online requirement) for free and "preserve" it. This is a non-issue.
Now live service games are a different story, but even if the game was completely on the disc it'd still be unplayable once they shut it down. Which is what SKG is trying to stop.

So it isn't dying after all? Why all the outrage then?
>while I have all my vidya all my shelf that I can back up at any moment and continue playing on an emulator
Explain what the practical difference is. Unless you live in a turd world country without internet access (how are you posting here?). It must be practical, no? For me physical is good because of what it represents, for (you) and MVG it is good because of the content of the disc. But what is the fundamental difference between storing the data in a blu-ray or in a hard drive or ssd or sd card?

>So it isn't dying after all?
as you can see it's mostly a meme, including disc rot and that "le disc is just a le loicense key" or whatever bullshit people like to say these days
the fact that people purchase less physical games is a undeniable and even then digital purchases also count cringe AI scam games, DLCs and games that never got a physical print in the first place like most indie games
for instance for first party playstation games the split is almost 50/50 and from the insomniac hack and the data we got the split was even higher in favour of physical over digital, for multiplats maybe it's different especially in case of games like cod where nowadays you won't be able to play the single player campaign without internet access which is madness but it's another topic
>Why all the outrage then?
I don't know
>what is the fundamental difference between storing the data in a blu-ray or in a hard drive or ssd or sd card
high quality pressed physical media will most likely than not outive you unironically, your ssd/hdd not so much
I buy digital on very big discounts for dirt cheap, I just like my shelf with vidya that's all, I can do whatever I want with it, lend it, sell it, use it as a gift for someone, can't do that with digital really

Switch 2 releases are 80% game key cards.

all three of them? I mean the console just dropped so it's kinda too early to say anything
anyway that's a separate thing that publishers and nintendo will have to sort out, as I remember first party nintendo will be on carts while publishers might pick the cheapest opiton which is the game key card, I didn't look much into it because I never owned a nintendo console

Dunno about those, Death Strading 2 installed everything from a disc and that's all it needed.
It's a question of avoiding shitty publishers.

I'd rather just have no game rather than a disc with no updates to fix the barely functional beta build.

Most rational people are just going to opt for the $10-$15 download over paying gayniggers on Ebay $150 for the Limited Run/Super Rare/Strictly Limites/etc. print.

Physical Media is SUPER niche.

Physical media still sells millions of copies, they tend to be split between 50/50 digital and physical.
Switch 2 third party games are all having very low sales because of key cards, if you were right then that wouldnt be the case. This means that people is just not buying games if they are not physical to the point they affect game developers negatively.

They are having low sales because who the fuck wants to play Street Fighter or Hogwarts Legacy on a Switch.
