>>715086023I've been mostly playing "retro" games for a long time now. Stuff like Unreal Gold, Thief the Dark Project, System Shock, OOT, Dungeon Siege, Mario 64, etc. I play AAA games once in a while like some assassin creeds or GTA or RDR.
I decided to peer out of my hole and try a AAA game with Ghost of Tsushima a few weeks ago. On the whole it's pretty fun. I really like the feeling of combat and the grass looks especially good. I find the story to be extremely slow, boring, and self important. All these Japanese actors jabbering about nonsense, stiff as a board. The thing that most surprises me is how little polish there is on simple elements..
Cloaks that blow in the wind constantly clip through meshes... you'd think a AAA game would have spent more time on this.. even Assassins creed Valhalla had it figured out, but Ghosts is a shit show for fabric simulation.
Then there is the sword, this is a huge pet peeve of mine. You draw the sword fine, but if you have your sword out and do any action other then patiently waiting for the character to sheathe the sword, it just teleports into the sheathe. There's no custom animation to put it away before jumping on your horse or climbing on to a wall or anything, it just disappears into the sheath... this is shit that OOT figure out 20 years ago.
Overall the animation system and character movement is surprisingly janky, with the character getting stuck on edges of terrain and getting locked into weird landing animations when falling 3 inches.
Ghosts is still a fun game with some great art direction and fun combat, but surprisingly lacking polish for a supposed blockbuster AAA hit.
