Would the Crash Bandicoot series have survived into the modern era if the characters weren’t designed to be intentionally ugly? Seriously they all look like byproducts of gamma radiation and inbreeding.

The only ugly design there is Von Clutch and thats because hes a cybernetic nugget.

it's wild all they had to do with crash and spyro was keep making more of the same but they decided to ruin it all

Crash was stylistically era-driven. The same goes for games like Little Big planet. Sack boy may have had a very appealing design but the characters and world where something of a dirty slightly edgy style that people grew bored of.
