Un-ironically gitgud and learn how the stat block equates to actual usage. A lot of the guns in ME1 look awesome when you first pick them up but are actually garbage due to the heat capacity.

In all seriousness though, I would be fine with the whole thermal clip thing if it was optional. As in, keep the infinite ammo from 1 but allow the use of a thermal clip if you want to skip cool down and keep firing like mad. Make them rare enough to be strategic about usage.

I really wasn't sure why they didn't do that. Just make it so that guns naturally reduce heat at a slower/faster rate depending upon the gun, but a thermal clip can be used to instantly expunge all heat and begin firing again after just a moment. I don't even think they need to be THAT rare, just not finding 10 of them in every little container.

ME 1 combat felt like the best in the series for me, and while ME 2 had "smoother" shooter gameplay, I felt that the sprint nerf was beyond retarded, regenerating health removed any tension that the combat had, and the sound design for weapons was infinitely worse. The ME 1 shotgun and sniper had a deafning "BOOM!" to them that ME 2 really lacked, and the feedback made them feel like unruly, dangerous weapons (getting in close in ME1 with a shotgun was incredibly high-risk-high-reward type shit, as the combat was much more fatal and you didn't have the "i-frame lunge" ability that the psy-brawler class gets in ME2).

Warp Ammo is great, so is pull. Shotguns are fine for companions in ME2 thanks to the Geth Plasma Shotgun. Shockwave is ass on higher difficulties, but you always have to leave something lower leveled anyways. She’s not optimal, but she’s perfectly useable even on Insanity.
