I will expose myself here and ask what you guys think of this idea i've been sitting on for awhile. The basic gameplay premise is similar to god hand. Tank controls, right stick for dodge, and customizable moveset.

Face buttons are your attacks. Unlike God Hand, there are no universal attacks so neutral attack, forward attack, and back attack are all open for moves, potentially even back>forward inputs if I really wanted to give the players as many moves as possible.

Square is where you can put your combo attacks but every input can have up to 3 "combos" attached to it and the special property of these moves is that the recovery is cancellable into other attacks, which makes chaining the combo attack itself faster than normal but also allows you to seamlessly chain into other non-square attacks faster as well.
X attacks have no special properties
Triangle attacks are where you can place special modifiers on attacks. i.e. attack is 25% faster but deals 50% less damage, ability to charge the attack for extra damage, attack gains armor properties but has uncancellable recovery if it whiffs.
O is exclusively for throw moves. I've thought about it a lot but there's a lot of variety you can add to throws. i.e. you have normal throws which enemies can break out of, especially if used too much but are very strong. Hit throws that have to connect with an unblocked enemy to do anything but can't be broken out of, throws that exist to combo into for damaging enders.

I also thought it would be cool to have special attacks mapped to R1+face button that of course can be swapped out and work kind of like streets of rage 4 where they cost health to use but can be regained by hitting enemies.

I was just wondering if this layout sounds appealing or if it's over complicated or what.

I got stranger of paradise in the sale, and the action is good but everything around it has aids. More random dogshit to pick up and sift through than borderlands, all so that I can make a build with +2.3% scrotum distension. Skill trees and job levels in a game where I'M meant to be the one getting better. Also fuck the cutscenes, just because I can skip them doesn't mean I should deal with multiple back to back ones and the associated 80gb file size.
Anyway does this shit get better? I'm at the end of my 2 hour "demo" period and I'm thinking I might just refund it and try Ninja Gaiden instead. I have a hard copy of black waiting to be played right there.

A first playthrough is not balanced around you optimizing your gear and the game has a pretty steady progression of gear. Optimizing gear to have the absolute best balance of damage/defense and stats and stuff won't do you any favors because you will very quickly find gear in the next few levels that trump your "optimized" gear purely with raw stats being higher. The game is not going to be incredibly easier or harder because of good or bad RNG drops.

That's more or less what I expected, like I said the action is good but you can't tell at the start how much it's going to lean into any aspect, and when I have other games on hand that just don't have skinner box loot just makes those stick out more.

I don't know what you mean by not being able to tell how much it'll lean into aspects, the first level gives you several weapons, abilities and mechanics to play with and presents the variety the job system will allow, the game keeps adding more and more in that regard. I will at least say that the game does go much heavier on the cutscenes at the start to convey the setting and the initial plot, but there is still enough that seems off to add an air of mystique to what is going on particularly if you're familiar with Final Fantasy already. They ease off after the second main mission. The amount of loot doesn't mean anything because of how the systems surrounding it work, stop letting your preconceived notions twist you. Regardless of how much they drop you can still dump it immediately due to auto-dismantle etc., what it does is let you progress quickly without needing to look through gear at all.

They're all good, the PSP games are designed far more for single player with having a lot of content and RPG mechanics, but the core combat is very enjoyable and the characters have a lot of variety to them. NT focuses significantly more on the multiplayer and does have a free version but I doubt there are many people online, it was done dirty in too many ways to count. Back to the PSP games, Duodecim is the sequel but it has basically everything from the first game included.

They're full 3D movement arena fighters, the PSP games are 1v1, Duodecim is 1v1 with an assist system, while NT is 3v3 as standard. They have a pretty unique damage system where you have two types of attacks, HP attacks which do actual damage based on Bravery, and Brave attacks which increase said Bravery by lowering the opponent's. That opens up a variety of strategies and mindgames based on what you prioritize. Beyond that you would be better just watching footage or trying it out.

in dark souls, you are largely meant to run 1 or 2 weapons, upgrade those weapons, and have a very narrow stat range that heavily limits what options you have in any given scenario

if you take dark souls and remove all levelups/upgrades, like there's a mod for elden ring that does, i think, inherently, the average action game player (someone that really plays them regularly, not someone that plays once and moves on) becomes much more well versed than a typical player, the typical player in that example will still just use the one best weapon while the typical action game player will experiment with dozens of weapons/spells/etc.

I've been playing kh recom these days and 2nd Vexen is the first boss that is actually giving me trouble. I can dodge his freeze sleight but the needles one is still hard and the way I built my deck I don't have 0s
I know I could modify the deck but I got close multiple times and I want to beat it like this now. Fucker will wait to play cards but the microsecond I play an elixir he will find a way to card break it.

His first phase is easy with RG because the ice rain falls in a single spot so you can jump and RG pretty consistently. In his second phase the ice rain keeps falling for longer and in random patterns that track your location so while I could still RG 80% of the time, I would ocassionally still get hit in the recovery by a single tiny delayed ice shard and while it's chip damage it means the SS is gone. It's a pretty shit boss to be honest. I lot of guides just cheese him with guns in the corner. I could do the same but what would be the point, it's not fun.

Give me genuine arguments for why NG2 Black is "bad" and you can't say because it's based on the Sigma version.

Remember that between OG 1 and Black, there were quite a lot of changes, including removal of certain things. Even if you hate sigma 2, it undoubtedly improved some aspects of the game. 2 Black is a culmination of changes between both games. Namely it keeps every good sigma change (i.e. removing some really bad encounters or bosses, improving bow and bow segments, adding some okay-ish bosses) while restoring original design of enemies health/damage + delimb rate for weapons (while nerfing ones that were too OP). Enemy count is a mix between sigma and NG2, mostly restoring cut encounters and less enemies is an actual improvement in certain areas that were way too lengthy for their own good while providing very little challenge.

Souls is not really much of an action game to begin with, really. They are all designed mainly around the other aspects like level design, the bossfights are just the payoff for overcoming the rest. The combat itself is simplistic and relies heavily on the enemy design more than the player moveset, though obviously you can still do some funky stuff.
It's kinda the inverse of stuff like DMC. Makes me wish there were more games that focused on the same sort of level design and adventure game-like focus as Souls, but also had way more in-depth action game combat like DMC or Nioh.
