It's because the Ryza games have a somewhat oppressive and depressing atmosphere similar to the Dusk games. The plot is much more pressing and serious compared to series like Arland or Mysterious. It also doesn't help that the entire setting of the Ryza games is a history of suffering and calamity that are not front and center like other series.

I started playing Ryza like a year ago and took a break halfway-ish (think Empel just gave me the training dummy puni and just got to the tower). Tried to get back into it again and completely forgot what items were where and how the battle system worked that I'm tempted to just restart

sophie 1 is probably one of the worst ateliers in retrospect. it's a lot of peoples first atelier though so i can see why they think its good. sophie 2 is vastly superior in nearly every regard but i'm not a very big fan of mysterious games and sophie 2 is no exception to that.

The most important part of Atelier is the alchemy, and the Mysterious games (and Lulua) do it best. The only thing Sophie 1 got wrong was the combat system, and the later Mysterious games fixed that.

Sophie's characters also sucked though

Eh, no worse than most other Atelier casts. Julio is kind of boring, but the rest of them are fine. I do wish they'd left Yuugen out of it and let NOCO do all the character designs, though.
