LoD has some underrated worldbuilding and creation myth shit and uses a satisfying amount of the core 10k year backstory. It was an almost overwhelming amount of lore for a PS1 JRPG compared to most of the competition and most all of it is fun to either read about in the manual or learn about in the game. The base story and characters are more compelling than a game where 1/3rd of the cast is a silent protagonist self-insert and Additions and Dragoon Additions are better than arts. Better environs to cross, better graphics in general, better towns, boss and monster designs, the only thing LoL has on it probably is the music and neither game is spectacular in that regard although LoD probably has the best menu music in the universe. Songi was a based villain, but LoD has a higher quantity of good villains. I remember LoD having more sidequests as well and these sidequests revealing more about the world or its characters.

One thing I like about LoD that rarely if ever gets mentioned is the attention to detail in random places, such as several events changing based on if you chose to go to an area or not immediately when you can or wait until later. Most of these you literally have no real reason to ever backtrack to.
>most towns in the game you have no real reason to go back to after the first visit but if you do NPC dialog will change based on where you are in the story.
>going to the fort in the woods with Lavits in your party has a big battle there, but if you ignore going there until after getting Albert there is no battle and instead Albert talks about the fort.
>going back to Kazas after disk 1 you can see that the Great Commander of Sandora became the mayor
>ignoring Kamuy until you get Miranda has different dialog
>if you go back to the Prairie after disk 1 the woodman will be there at his shack
>Seles has an entire multi-disk event involving Shana's parents
>going back to Donau immediately after saving Lynn lets you see the wedding
>if you go to the dock at Fueno and move Dart down towards the screen and press X he will wave to you

It's a good FF clone, anyways it's the only one. You're gonna complain about pre-rendered backgrounds and gorgeous cutscenes, when basically no one except Square was doing that?
Plus it's more fantasy oriented than FF7/8, which justifies its existence even more.
It's not as good as FF8 in terms of creativity and innovation, but it's more fun to play.

It's very forgettable, unfortunately. Drops the seru catching for some boring magic. Replaces that little grind with a crafting system to get broken items. Doesn't really get cool until the very end, but is still less climactic and intense than LoL's ending.
The only thing I liked were the party members. The pirate chick is obviously a babe, and the old monk is very fun to watch do his arts.

Dragoon fucking sucks and is proof that you can't just add timed hits to a turn based combat and expect it to be magically better. Like seriously, one of the most mediocre JRPGs, Mario and Luigi/Paper mario are fucking gods compared to it

The additions are fun to do. Each character has a different fighting style and you get to choose who you like the most. (Recommend getting the mod to remove Dart though so you can have different parties.)
The graphics, sound, and story are all above average in the genre.

If you like turn based JRPGs, LoD is a must play. Combat is mechanically interesting, if a bit imbalanced once you figure out the quirks. And like that other anon said, the game has such rich lore you can easily immerse yourself in its world. The creature design is incredibly unique too, with Dragon designs you won't see anywhere else. The characters are also very enjoyable aside from one in Disc 3; you'll know them when you see them and getting to learn about them and watch them grow as people, especially during specific points in Disc 2 and Disc 4.

My only gripes about the game myself are the music can be a bit directionless, the story as a whole is pretty cliche by modern standards (though the characters do a lot of the heavy lifting so it evens out), and the aforementioned game balance where magic is insanely OP and Dragoons have too many downsides to be worth using, especially when specific bosses are designed specifically to counter them. But despite this, I still adore it and do a yearly replay.

Also fuck the Grand Jewel. Fuck it to hell.

It's bizarre how ignored Legend of Legaia is for how insanely good it is. I understand a jrpg not doing great during the PS1 days, because the market was flooded with them, but the fact it hasn't received a larger cult following in the years since is criminal.

I liked Legaia but only because I was much younger and could mindlessly grind, I discovered much later in my life that they halved XP and money in the US version, like I knew something was off cause even in end game you got shit for XP and money, it made some bosses INSANELY hard since you where underleveled without hours worth of grinding.
The old man in the tower comes to mind, Vaan was the only one that could tank his hits so I just very slowly chipped away at him till I won.

Kinda funny because Legend of Dragoon did the opposite, doubling XP and Gold in the US version.
They also halved enemy HP and doubled magic damage (but not physical for some reason).
US version is basically the easy mode.

Because it got lost in the crowd. There's very little variance in quality between PS1 jRPGs. The biggest differences tend to be in the graphics and music, but the strategy involved in the gameplay, and stories, all about as good as each other.
If you made a list of the top 10, a third of them would pretty easily be Final Fantasy games. Probably more than half would be Squaresoft games. Put a Tales in there, a Breath of Fire game, a Wild Arms game, Star Ocean 2, Suikoden 2...we're running out of space.

Neither.
>remake
Fuck remake culture. They will add nothing new aside from "modern" graphics (potentially destroying the art direction in the process as most remakes do) while also finding ways to make everything else worse.
>prequel
There's nothing to cover. We already know everything worth learning about the Dragon Campaign. The game would just be a big fat filler game made specifically for the handful of LoD fans that actually want a prequel, which is not a sizable market.

Give me a sequel that's set far into the future of the already established world. Far enough that the main characters of the original are (mostly) long gone, but their legacy remains, so the game can survive on its own terms instead of trying to be successful as a new addition to an IP that hasn't been relevant in almost 3 decades.

Prequel if I'm forced to but neither. It's perfect as is and some things can be left alone without grimy executive hands touching it. And if it's a prequel I don't want them to go the obvious route of doing Rose's story, have it take place between that and the main game with established long lived characters having cameos at the most.

It was a pain in the ass to emulate for a long time, so once people stopped playing PS1 games on the original hardware, it fell further and further into obscurity. And seeing how you can throw a rock in any direction and hit ten good PS1 RPGs, Legaia got left behind in the discussion. I'm hoping for some kind of port with skippable spell animations to reinvigorate interest in it, but I doubt it'll ever happen.
