Overwatch did ultimately kill TF2 by making the devs panic and roll out the Meet Your Match update

I don't play a ton of multiplayer games but have there been other updates that have completely obliterated their game? TF2 went to straight to hell after MYM.

Now they have to waste time sitting in a queue, getting into a server that just finished its round, and waiting a few more minutes for the server to restart on the same map for no reason.

this update was so bad I quit playing tf2 on the spot and sold all my items at the time.
nowadays I log in once in a blue moon when i have the itch but the game and community are unrecognizable. People don't even pretend to trying to play the game in South America.

Also, multiversus literally died after the devs decided to take one huge ass break from the game to update the engine, that alone killed the hype for the game.

No what killed TF2 was time. It's been out far longer, hasn't had much in new content, and got worse when they made it F2P letting in over 9000 ping Chinese players.

matchmaking barely changed anything and is just an easy scapegoat for other problems

it literally ruined server browsing because new players flocked to it and it was broken for the longest time. in fact it is easier to quit the match and rejoin than wait for a new one because no one know to this day that quickplay has team scramble after a match ends.

newgen players wouldn't use the server browser if it was the only thing available, they'd just bounce off the game entirely
oldheads could still use the server browser but they've mostly moved on
