How did some tiny indie studio manage to pull this off while every other developer has failed?

the whole game *is* quite good about restricting and encouraging specific approaches, without really descending into red&blue enemies in donte's game excluding some wagglan gimmicks no fucking clue how to dodge the second bitch's invulnerable grab
dodge or parry and go on the offensive early or get ready for a full combo or charge the boost attack

If you want a game where parrying is extremely dynamic, fleshed out, a major element, and simultaneously 100% optional and with alternatives at every moment, try ultrakill

imo even good defense systems fail if the enemies are shallow and don't do anything but attack. dynamic enemies that alternate attack and defense cleverly are the way to go, but it takes serious effort to make them which scares the modern game developer

Furi's parry is really just reacting to a white flash and nothing else, and its automatically the best option 90% the time its presented to you. you dont really care about positioning much and just press a button. Parrying against projectiles in furi is a lot more fleshed out in that regard
UK's parry is much more freeform and can cause a bigger variety of different shit to happen, theres two different ways to parry melee attacks, and theres a much bigger variety of "counter-reflect" options for projectiles other than parrying, like blasting them with your arm explosion, or deflecting hitscans using your own projectile primarily meant to interact with your own hitscans
>>715142008
Have you even played UK?
In DMC you dont even need to aim the fucking royal guard, the royal guard doesnt interact with your own tools and its about building meter. And youre doing it on the fly instead of being bolted to the floor during it

theres nothing wrong with that, the point isnt about blaming furi, but factually speaking its not very far into the direction of what OP describes: Furi's parry still suffers from being one dimensional in a lot of ways like recent parryslop (if not moreso) and its still a go-to move whenever the game tells you that you should parry, simon says style, so i gave OP an alternative that actually does what he described in a more impressive way

if you are complaining about simplicity, that is a weird comment, since successful overworld parry gives you plenty of invul frames to start another parry or dodge wave attacks
it's very comparable to close quarters combat, where melee attacks are intertwined with dodge-only ones, and parry is the optimal action (unless forced otherwise)

I don't understand you point. This game came out 3 years before Sekiro, the average gamer wasn't nearly as comfortable parrying everything (as opposed to spacing / dodging).

You can see this in the Samurai guy's boss fight. I promise you anyone playing that for the first time post 2020 will find that boss a joke. Find discussion from 2016, people found him hard as fuck, because he was when they forced the player to "git gud" and learn to parry, but all modern games will have gotten the parry locked in after the first boss now.

Now note that parrying also reflects projectiles, heals you, and for some reason you can parry while shooting, it's an incredibly OP option, and easy to execute because its timing is universally tied to that light flashing. It's just that the game also forces you into plenty of bullet hell segments or other mechanics where the parry isn't useful.

i do like furi but i think it could have used parrying being a bit more fleshed out on melees: Actually having to watch out for animations instead of the white flash, for instance. Parrying projectiles has a lot more choice/playstyle and combines with other tools like dashing into a ton of projectiles, parrying melees mostly lives in isolation
