>on a good display there's no ghosting even
ghosting has literally nothing to do with a display
it's an issue with the human eye and the speed of the objects on screen versus how fast they're updating (the fps)
60 fps is 60 fps

stop talking about things you don't know about
we're not talking about smearing artifacts, ghosting is the double vision you get
it goes away when you try to track the object on screen, but that is very stressful for the eyes for lower fps since each jump between frames is larger, compared to a higher fps

I disagree, I mastered the game up until I could clear 10* on PSP releases, and it only took me a little bit of getting used to to clear 8* on arcades.
The only difficult part about the drum is that your arm is not catching up with your eyes, but that's less to do with the difficulty of the instrument, and it's more to do me needing to lift moar.

So am I.
It's always funny when those autists bring their own sticks and practice their rolls and then end up failing a 10 or breaking a combo. I remember one Chinese dude who ended up shouting out of frustration when I got both a higher score and better accuracy against him with the regular arcade sticks.

Yeah but imo "fun and satisfying" is not worth buying a giant and overpriced dedicated controller for it
I have IIDX controller because that game needs that controller but I didn't really feel the same for Taiko, playing with pads and going to the arcades once in a while is good enough

"Taiko isn't fun without the drum" is cope from people who don't actually play the games. You should definitely play the game with a good tatacon if you have the ability because it's a lot of fun, but using a normal gamepad (with good face buttons) or a keyboard (though I prefer gamepad) is not a deal breaker.
It might not look like it when first coming into the game, but Taiko is a mostly cerebral game. I'd say it's 80% about recognizing and breaking apart patterns and intuitively understanding complex rhythms and only 20% physical execution. Most skills you learn from playing with a gamepad will transfer over to a drum and vice versa.
You only absolutely need a drum once you start reaching that level where you want to FC > 240 bpm 10* oni charts, but if you're just starting off it's probably going to take you years of consistent gameplay before you even get to that level so most people won't need to stress about it.

I don't know how to exactly describe it, but in Taiko the notes just sort of blur together. I have trouble following them and recognizing each individual note that comes. I can totally match the pure rhythm, but hitting the right section of the drum is a no go. Maybe it's the fact it's a single lane. At the very least I don't think I'm colorblind lmao.

the 16-17 wall is real as fuck, there are barely any charts at the 16 range that really teach you hand trips and then they are prevalent throughout all of 17s, unironically your best bet is to just brute force 17s until you get it.

If you say that you don't know jack shit about pop'n. They made it with an intention for normal fags to play IIDX with two people that's why it has twice as much buttons with casual friendly visuals, but that gimmick didn't stick and instead autists latched onto it to as hardcore IIDX with twice as more buttons.
Obviously there are more easier songs, and it does give you an option to use less buttons, but if you're going to claim that you play pop'n you are going to have to use all that button just by yourself.

was recently at a video game museum that was more like a big arcade though with a few rooms that did go into history about vidya. we played some taiko which is always fun but i actually found a rhythm heaven machine but we quickly had to leave after finding it and the friend i was with doesn't care for rhythm games beyond taiko

feels bad having such good taste sometimes.

Thanks anon, I'll keep it in mind. Right now I barely beat 16s, and the best 17 I tried I finished with 20% gauge. Gotta keep grinding.

Single play IIDX has 8 lanes (7 keys + scratch) to differentiate note patterns spread out all across.
Taiko is 1 single lane with a shit ton of notes compressed in such a tight space where you dont really get that same level of pattern recognition to help you out.

Or at least that was my initial impression when trying to play taiko and getting utterly filtered by it

I got me the Switch drum and yeah it's kind of collecting dust because it's too noisy, I play with a controller 80% of the time. Personally I feel like there's only about a 20% loss in terms of hand-eye coordination and performance going from a controller to the drums so I can play on around the same difficulty levels either way.

At least one of the top osu!mania players used to be some chink playing on an old laptop, with notes probably flying by in 2-3 frames, and there's plenty of top rhythim players on old ipads. The game looks prettier at 240hz but if you suck don't blame the hardware.

taiko is all pattern recognition, it's just a different kind of pattern recognition from multi-lane rhythm games. once you play more, breaking down long dense note streams into small comprehensible repeatable chunks that you've already muscle-memorized becomes second nature and you won't even consciously think about it

What room is there to innovate in the Taiko style of rhythm games, though? The gameplay has been the exact same since the first game came out in 2001.
The games that come the closest to Taiko that still feel like they are doing something different instead of being outright clones/simulators are Muse Dash and Project Mirai.

Horizontal scrolling on a single lane is just a pain in ass. Might just be a personal skill issue, but having to view the screen at an angle is also another factor that fucks with my perspective. I honestly hate that aspect more than the horizontal scrolling.

I recommend remembering each beat chunks (i.e. red-blue-blue-red) as a block of input, instead of trying to hand-eye coordinate each notes.
Once you mastered every possible blocks it's not that difficult, triplet to quadruplet patterns for 8*, quintuplet patterns for 9*. Harder songs tries to throw you off by mixing duplets so master that too.
10* would start giving you long endless set of patterns but if you mastered quadruplet and quintuplet patterns, you'd naturally be able to break that long chunks into small blocks.

There's rocksmith which is sort of guitar hero-ish but for a real guitar. The new version is subscription based and you'd eb paying ubisoft but you can pirate an older one modded to not use their proprietary shit.
DTXMania for drums whhere you can use an edrum set as a controller.
Admittedly both are a pain in the ass to set up but it's there.
For piano I think there are a few things you can connect a keyboard to, don't have any off the top of my head though.
Instruments in general have that immediate feedback of if you are doing well or not like games, so I dunno, it doesn't feel that much different. I still suck at music though admittedly.

>>715147941
Well this is socialising and discussion which I feel is different enough to be separate from writing a novel. I'll acknowledge that where you put the line something goes from just inferior imitation to it's own separate thing will be kinda arbitrary in the end though. You may disagree.

I wouldn't do that, but I'd tell someone playing a VR boxing game to go practice real martial arts, probably. I think there's this uncanny valley of simulation. If it's abstracted I think it's okay and if the simulation was perfect well that would by definition be the same as the real thing, but when the level of simulation is approaching the real thing but not quite it's becoming increasingly more difficult to justify why not just make the final jump to the real thing. Some good reasons would be that it's too dangerous, expensive or impractical but we are not talking about a flight sim here.

But there is no uncanny valley of simulation though, I do both instrumentals and rhythm games (with "specialized equipment") but they aren't same at all, not even fundamentally
Rhythm games are closer to fighting games, FPS or any other video games if anything, it's more to do with timing and hand-eye coordination.
Unless you aren't rhythm deaf rhythm games only require basic understanding of rhythm, beyond that it's more to do with shoe-honing in on input, complete opposite of musical instrumentals where if you want to go beyond just copying songs, you have to study music theories.
