Are enemies different here from Asylum? I don't want to play again versus 10 thugs crowding me wherever I go or 20 distracting that distract me in boss fights

there are a bunch of new enemies and the way the work is better, but you will still fight big groups all the time, i mean what the fuck do you expect? you do get extremely powerful moves to take out even the biggest groups in a matter of seconds if you know what you're doing, which might be the issue

City is a pretty big step up in terms of combat compared to Asylum. It introduces more enemy types, which you have to use different approach to, more gadgets to play with, and there's some QoL improvements to the basic combo flow making it smoother (easier).
But it doesn't sound like you're enjoying these games.

Arkham Origins was alright til villain reveal ruined everything.
Knight made gameplay easier and has the best graphics where games now still don't compare and a much bigger world than all but the writing is the worst of the bunch, Batmobile takes up everything and it's annoying, etc. Only thing Knight has over the rest is it has the most characters to play as:

The Knight hate is unjustified. Batmobile segments are fun too, even if it's overused a bit. And I like story/postgame progression in Knight. I really enjoyed the city cleanup, throwing all those "minor" villains behind the bars.
ONE thing I like much better in City than the other two games was boss fights. Boss fights in City were both more engaging mechanically and more cinematic. Also there was more diversity in combat encounters there.

I just finished Asylum on Hard, I liked the story, setting, environment, I didn't mind thugs in open, but every boss fight there are 10 thugs in waves chasing me, core gameplay is supposed to spam space in circles? When you enter Joker's party, you can fight 16 thugs in smallest space possible for achievement, then you fight thugs and thugs on roids, then literally right after it's thugs again, how original

I assume space is what dodge is bound to on keyboard. In which case you're playing the game wrong. Which is quite common. Well, Asylum combat is more basic compared to the sequels, but it still applies. You're not supposed to be spamming dodge, because dodge does nothing beside getting you out of harm's way. Dodging doesn't counter enemies (outside of the enemy types that are specifically supposed to be countered by dodging). You're supposed to counter every enemy attack accordingly to actually start doing damage. In fact you're not supposed to be spamming any move, dodge or otherwise. You're supposed to build up your combo meter, to make your moves stronger and faster. You need to utilize both defensive counters and your own attacks, because the latter do much more damage than the former. Plus, you're supposed to use your takedowns, gadgets and other moves, when dealing with enemies. BamHam combat is not like Souls, where you just dodge and attack. It's a little closer to stylish action games like DMC, because just getting through the combat encounter isn't the main priority. It's to keep the combo chain going and getting higher score multiplier.

This is true for the other games, but Asylum's combat is so basic I would unironically argue the best way to play it is literally to spam dodge and get one or two hits in then do your combo takedown.
The fun stuff is for the later games where the combat doesn't feel super weird and janky, and where you actually get more then 3 moves.

Yeah, Asylum combat is more basic, as I already mentioned before, but it's also more strict. The input windows are tighter. If you leave the combo hanging for slightly longer than it allows - the game will drop your combo counter. Or, for example, when you get attacked by two enemies at the same time, in Asylum, if you press counter three times, you risk resetting your combo. While the sequels are more forgiving, and you can mash counter for a brief moment against multi-attacks, and the game will drop the extra inputs.

Also OP played Asylum for the first time on hard mode.
Arkham Asylum Hard mode doesn't show enemy counter indicators, which makes countering significantly harder for someone who's never played the game before.
Given that, yeah, spamming dodge is probably fair.

There's more enemy types and I think there's more enemies crowding you than in Asylum but you've got more CC options, one is borderline broken

Honestly, they did right by locking the no indicator mode on NG+ in the following games. It's a difficulty setting you should use when you're accustomed to the enemy attack patterns. Playing without indicators on the first playthrough is just going to be a frustrating experience.

newbie to knight, i beat the game already and on ng+ now but i sometimes watch yt vids of people in combos that seem to involve a lot of kicks but as far as i know theres no kick button, just the square button to attack, what are they doing? is it mods on pc or something because ""expert"" combos on yt look nothing like what im getting, mine look so basic button mashing tier shit and im pretty sure there was no tutorial on these advanced looking combos

Because that's probably what you're doing?
You're supposed to build up your combo chain and enter the "free flow" combat mode. Which makes you faster and stronger. In free flow mode Batman will dash towards and kick distant enemies.
You are supposed to press the attack button once per hit (well, not really, since some attack animations are multi-hit). If you mash the attack button before your previous hit connects - you will drop the combo. Of course, same goes for taking damage. Batman is supposed to dance around the battlefield and down enemies without taking a hit.
