what went wrong? this was everyone's favorite game a few months ago. now it struggles at 10k players.

1. Simple, they did nothing against the endless sweats. It's funny how this turns out like that every single time. I also quit because retards were constantly screaming and trying to blame everyone but themselves. The best way to describe this is that people act like as if they gambled that they win the game. Not even acting like it's their job because they certainly would never give a fuck about that. You often had retards screaming at someone in the group. Was basically never at me except for a few times, but basically people could cry and shoot and then say "nah I won't play with you guys you suck". While he is a spiderman that gets healed while the enemy is a non healed spiderman that has 5 times the kills. The problem is that the non-sweats simply left. Here in Germany it's fucked lmao. A month ago I decided to install it again and play a few rounds. I had to wait more than 30 seconds multiple times for a competitive round.
2. Engagement based matchmaking.
It's real, there is no doubt about that. I didn't touch the game and won 20 games in a row, went straight to diamond. From silver. Then won 4 matches in silver 2. Suddenly I lose 4 matches in a row in silver. Then I check this out, if I continue I would lose like 20 times in a row, if I quit and start again I get easy winds. This was the main problem for me. It is literally an AI deciding whether you lose or win. Yeah you can turn it around. Unlikely.
That's pretty much it, people got bored of it. Retarded sweats scream what is "meta" as heard from their favorite tiktoker/YouTuber and engagement based stomping. It could have been an amazing game but yeah.

Game does nothing against smurfs/retards and also the matchmaking system is genuinely bad and leads to stomp or be stomped matches.

That’s the core of it honestly. When every match is either a total steamroll or getting absolutely dumpstered, there’s no incentive to queue up again. You either feel like a god facing bots or like a punching bag at an esports convention. Combine that with zero real action against smurfs and the 12-year-olds screaming on comms, and yeah, people just bounce. Doesn’t help that they shove TikTok-tier meta changes every two weeks, balancing around streamers instead of actual player feedback. The upcoming patch would need to be a miracle to reverse this nosedive.

Patch 2.5 fucked the balance. It's that simple. Retards whined about dive, the weakest strategy, and as a result brawl and dive were both nerfed into the ground leaving less than a third of heroes viable.

Turns out people get mad when the characters they played for 6 months become useless.

Engagement based matchmaking. I want consistently hard, yet doable games against people my skill level. Stop throwing me in against literal toddlers because you think I'm getting bored after putting me against two six-stack god squads back-to-back. The predictability of it makes it that much worse. Being able to predict the outcome before even queueing up is what's actually making me bored.

Well it cracked 100k now.
I doubt it will go much higher though.
Matchmaking is AIDS + stupid events are killing the game.

Every single team based game is like this
First months is fun because there's new player, all the "fun chaos" is just people not playing well and you being over the average skill curve.
Time goes on and people start to learn, get better, meta settles, ultracasual leaves, and you end up actually playing with people your level, and you don't like that because you like to win.
Only the sweaty remains.
This isn't a new thing, it looks like a very predictable and reasonable natural progression.

I don't really nave the best sense of how these things go since I don't really play hero shopters but the content cadence for Rivals seems pretty slow compared to most hero shooters, haven't they only added like a small handful of characters since launch?
