oh look. game broken COMPLETELY wide open just on this alone and its the first wand in the first shop. would a new player use this? yeah probably, and then theyd shoot the wall and spawn a steve and he would kill them and the run would end. this is my main gripe about calling this game a roguelite. you could start new players off with all spells unlocked, as its the only real form of cross-run progression, and it would make basically no difference. a new player has no idea how to use the greek letters or omega or orbits or any of that shit. i will ignore the fact that right here in this wand alone the game is totally destroyed broken into a million pieces

as a new player you should pretty much always check your perks first to decide if theres more value in rerolling to potentially get something better than spending it on spells or wands in the shop. you have to learn how to make that judgment call. here i will just take toxic immunity because its easily one of the best perks, any time you see an immunity (or one of the immunities that come with a downside) you pretty much just insta snap it up and be happy that you didnt have to reroll
this changes when you start looking for more specific things but as a beginner just learn the perks and try to gain some sort of understanding of whats good. immunities are basically always good, some are better than others. id take explosion immunity over the rest, maybe id order them something like
explosion>melee>electric>fire>toxic

>>715178457>you'd realistically need a build at least to start withlol. Lmao, even
>>715178601uhh as an aside there are other things you can do to kill him like use circle of polymorph to turn him into a sheep and one shot him, use circle of stillness to freeze him or anything else that can freeze him and then kick him to instantly kill him, you can use some form of homing and the summoned rocks to instantly kill him, there are many ways of dealing with him but the simple and most effective and available to you on every single run are the statue kick and the tablet kick. id recommend learning how to do the statue kick

continuing, ive tried here to highlight what im actually looking at when i see the wands in this shop. BASICALLY what im looking for on a wand are:
- NO shuffle: this is the single most important stat on a wand if it is shuffle:yes then you can pretty much ignore the rest of the stats and just look at the spells on it. theres definitely cases where using shuffle wands is fine like when you have a single spell that you want to use then using shuffle doesnt matter because its always gonna be that spell. for example i frequently will put teleport on shuffle wands early on because they are usually pretty fast and the fact that its shuffling doesnt matter
-Mana charge speed: the rate that mana regenerates on the wand. higher is better. for the first shop you want something 50+, second shop 100+ ideally
all these wands you see that have less than like 45 mana charge speed should be ignored, they are practically useless in almost all cases
-recharge time: this is how long it takes the wand to "reload" after its fired all its spells. you want this to be as low as possible, aim for something lower than 0.6, it would be 0 ideally, this will give you nearly 2 shots per second and thats enough to deal with most threats early on given a decent payload of spells
-cast delay: this is the time between spells, lower is better, you want something lower than like 0.2 here, ideally 0
ill continue this thought in the next post
10

🔍
recharge time and cast delay can be MODIFIED on a per wand basis
MEANING:
if you cast certain spells, those spells can change these numbers so just because a wand has certain stats doesnt mean it cant be "fixed" using spells. take heavy spread for example. if you find a way to include heavy spread in your payload, it will subtract 0.12s from the cast delay and 0.25s from the recharge time
so for example if we have a wand that has 0.5s recharge time and we use heavy spread to modify ANY one of the spells in the payload, the wand will now only take 0.25s to reload (0.5-0.25)
this is a huge difference, we're going from 2 shots per second to 4. now consider that you can trigger the same spell twice by "wrapping" around back to it, effectively giving you -0.5s recharge time, meaning after the wand fires all its spells it will be ready to fire again on the next frame
if you then also modify the cast delay down to 0, you have a wand that can fire on every single frame. the limiting factor at that point is how much mana you have to spend. sometimes its not great to make your wand go brrrrrrr right off the bat because the early wand stats just cant support that kind of mana usage
>>715179705I'd figured as much, but that doesn't change the fact heavy spread makes your wand useless to begin with
>>715180247Spark bolt with trigger (or any trigger/timer) have their payloads spawn where the projectile dies, ie on an enemy if you hit them with the trigger. That means path and aim modifiers don't matter. There's a bunch that add damage for no additional mana cost but make projectiles only travel on a linear path. Spark bolt trigger -> heavy spread / horizontal path / whatever -> pretty much any spell.
>>715180470so what's your build look like out of this first shop then? is it significantly better than the "spark bolt into bomb wand" strat?
>>715180735I'm not that anon and a relative wandlet but I'd probably do something like spark bolt with trigger, double spell, heavy spread, 2 bouncing burst in the wand he labeled number 1.
last thing to say on what i see in the shop: the spells
in this pic
>>715179216 i kinda changed the weight of the lines on the things that catch my attention more than others, obviously heavy spread is insane i already explained why, but the 2 other viable projectile type spells there are spark bolt w/ trigger and pollen
pollen is an amazing early game digging spell, you NEED some form of digging for the coal pits, this isnt an option. if you dont have digging for the 2nd floor you are almost definitely going to be dead in the water come the snow level because its very impractical to explore most of the area unless you have some kind of digging. couple this with the fact that the extra hp hearts are all encased in some kind of diggable material, and you have a practical necessity to have some form of digging and pollen does that for us
now here is where you are going to get mad, our only real option for building a decent wand out of these spells is to use spark bolt w/ trigger and assemble some kind of payload for it
the trigger spells are huge because they allow you to cast spells remotely, so if i hit an enemy with a spark bolt with trigger it will trigger all the spells in its payload inside the enemy that it hit, meaning instead of having to aim all the different spells we just aim one and the rest just hit automatically by virtue of spawning inside the enemy hitbox. we do not have great options for payload spells right now, nor do we have much in the way of multicasting to trigger lots of spells at once but we do have something
for now i am definitely buying the 1 wand in
>>715179216 because of the spark bolt trigger it basically ensures that we will have a good wand at some point we just need to find the rest of the pieces. i will also buy the 4 wand because it has pollen to dig and the extra multicasts that i can use to build up a payload. and then finally i will buy the 3 wand because its no shuffle and it has a lot of slots for us to play with

breathless - neutral, doesnt really help that much right now
homing - this seems good but i rarely ever take it because theres a ton of cases where you dont actually want your shots to automatically home in. and homing is a modifier that you can put on a wand yourself. if you took the rock wand from the fungal above like i showed and then took this though thats an amazing one spell one perk combo that destroys the entire game
and last is exploding corpses - effectively this is explosion immunity with the downside that you will now have to dodge fire all over the place. the upside is you never have to worry about explosion damage again which means hiisi base is mostly free since the only actually dangerous shit in there are the hidden propane tanks that end up fucking you
so thats my pick, easily, no question, exploding corpses

spells in the shop, green highlighted are spells i care about and would almost always buy if i saw them
teleport - obvious

holy lance - little known fact that this can actually dig brickwork in a pinch

just a slow and steady, precise type of gameplay with this wand. i really dont even need to open it up and use all the mana, just a few frames of this will kill most enemies on the floor instantly
>>715188079so both cast delay and recharge time are at zero at this point?
>>715177967They googled OP wands basically
>>715188246because if I am counting this right, according to the +5 per projectile, this should be around 50 damage per payload, so 50*60=3000 dps?
How's the coop experience with that mod? I've been meaning to try this game and if it's with a buddy then might be even better.
>>715188708i didnt math it out but we can do that
cast delay:
the wand starts at 0.52
spark bolt trigger: +0.05
luminous drill: -0.58
for this purpose the heavy spread's modification does not apply because it is considered to be "inside" the trigger and only affects that casting frame, same goes for all the spells inside the trigger that have modifications to cast delay. they simply dont apply to the stuff outside the trigger
0.52 + 0.05 - 0.58 = -0.01 = 0
so cast delay is 0 because negative is rounded up to 0
recharge time: starts at 0.47
luminous drill -0.17
heavy spread DOES affect the recharge time even if its inside the trigger and is -0.25
so
0.47 - 0.17 - 0.25 = 0.05
with a 0.05 delay it can fire 20 times per second which is great but it's not a 0 frame delay yet. we'd need a lot more mana recharge to be able to 0 frame this wand probably like 2 add manas or something, we could get away with just 1 but we'd probably wrap it instead and use it on a 1 frame delay (half as good but still good enough to kill most things pretty much instantly)
on another note, why i prefer having burst damage at the start over something i can just hold down forever is sometimes you just need a quick burst of damage to deal with a large threat. i heard lightning stuff above me and sure enough an ukko decided to drop down and almost hit me with a thunder charge. but i was able to kill him in one volley. im heading back to the shop to pick up the heal now because im not taking any more chances

ok at the shop above hiisi
clear pick here is fire immunity but ill just say
repelling cape - its ok. shines when you start being able to stack multiple of them and basically become immune to stains while moving. pairs well with stainless armor which gives damage reduction while you arent stained
revenge bullets - gives projectile resist but will fire shots back at things that hit you, i generally dont like this but its a fine perk if you have to take it
fire immunity is the clear winner though, goes well with my corpse explosion and is just generally one of the A or S tier perks in the game so thats what im taking

to a beginner player this might seem like nothing
but this is actually one of the strongest spells in the entire game
every time you cast this spell, yes if its in the main cast frame it will add +.17s cast time BUT its giving you 30 mana back to the wand's mana pool
this is insane BECAUSE

this wand alone will annihilate any challenge along the main path of the game. and most of the stuff outside of it as well, except some of the boss encounters that would require a more specific setup. and you could feasibly build something just like this on any run that you start
>>715195646>bug abusingThere are no bugs in this game. Only features. I appreciate the devs balancing the game around a lot of mechanics that would be considered game-breaking bugs anywhere else. My favorite one requires a combination of yours and an enemy's magic added and mixed in just the right way to effectively create your own immunity/absorption perks. Regardless of how powerful you get, there's always a way to get killed by something (at least pre-ending)
>>715195943so it all boils down to negating the effects of casting/recharge delay by using them on trigger payloads? or are there more strats
>>715196281Making a machine gun wand like that is usually the simplest way to go about it, but there's things like Homing Rock, Piercing Prickly Spore, Heavy Acceleratng Bouncy shot, infinite laser...
It all just depends on what tools you have at hand, but coming by the tools for a payload machine gun is super easy
i really liked this game, i pirated it twice and then bought it and put 50hrs into it. furthest i got was the jungle or something but im not able to do it consistently. im having fun going into the fungi map but i almost always die there. also if i dont get lightning or that homing laser i dont feel like playing anymore
>>715196945I assumed all endgame wands relied on divide-bys, like when you get into the 10+ orbs range
>>715196281Cast delay is negated by being in a payload, but recharge delay isn't.
There's also a funny quirk about chainsaw; it sets the cast delay to 0
You also have to manage your mana usage. The anon you're replying to is smart in using a bunch of deceptively useful modifiers that don't cost a drop of mana, but add damage or reduce recharge time.
>>715196996>if i dont get lightning or that homing laser i dont feel like playing anymoreYou gotta learn to make the best with what you've got. You can make absolutely beastly wands with spells you'd otherwise dismiss as junk.
chainsaw and matter eater
chainsaw is good for obvious reasons to knowers (it SETS the cast delay to 0 in any cast frame that it appears in, so if its in the top level cast frame it nullifies all cast delay no matter how much there is)
and matter eater is crazy for a lot of the same reasons that black hole is, with the upside that if you manage to find a long distance cast you can cast the long distance cast and put the matter eater inside the long distance cast and it wont use any charges of the matter eater but still gain the property of the matter eater (eating through the wall with LDR's invisible particle) see webm: this is not using any charges on matter eater yet it is destroying brickwork
>>715196281if you mean thats all the game boils down to, no, there's a lot of learning that goes into even being able to explore the dungeon effectively. but as far as building beginning damage wands, that is by far the most effective way that i know of to build strong wands without relying on combos that will not be available to you every run. pretty much in a nutshell:
find a trigger spell (actually doesnt even matter in most cases which one you use, shit ive used egg trigger to win before, but spark bolt trigger is generally considered the best for its properties)
find multicasts
find payload spells
stack as many spells as you can inside the payload
find payload modifiers to make them do more damage, like all the ones that give you +damage for 0 mana cost (linear arc is +5 damage for 0 mana and applies to all projectiles inside the payload)
but there are COUNTLESS other insane spell combos that you could happen to stumble upon but its a matter of 1.knowing them 2.actually finding them
and countless other ways of building actual damage too. this is just one method but its the one method i find most consistent

>>715183102There's a spell called rock that summons a rock that kills things when it lands on them because it's a physics object that is meant to do damage. You can add homing to it and homes in on things. There's perk that makes your kick incredibly strong so you can kick physics objects and do a million damage. There is also a perk that gives you the force that when picked it is immediately tested on the statues in the holy mountain since that is the nearest object, so you immediately learn you can grab and throw that to kill things.

By the time I learned how to do this, it was completely useless for my goal. Turns out utility spells don't spawn on wands at all. I can't tell you how many times I had to bloat parallel worlds my file until near crashes and compress New Game+ the file back down to start anew hopping from utility box to utility box in my mad hunt for the damn Wuplicate spell, the last on my list. I probably could have used a world-teleport wand for the task, but the speed in which I zoomed through the world made it not feel necessary. Bless the devs for adding the new mechanic to teleport bolts and adding the Watchtower for endless videos of careless Noitas splatting into it
>>715200382Yeah there are, but it's a pain in the ass to test them since neither the statues nor the holy mountain panels are going to give you an accurate reading on what's going on. You're most likely gonna need mods to test out the more esoteric mechanics yourself (or just read the wiki)
>>715200825a much closer comparison is like a roguelike super metroid (unironically)
>>715200825It's like a Terraria in the sense that it's a pixelated sidescroller with a world that can be built upon or destroyed. It's kind of like the old sandbox flash games where every pixel is simulated and can react with each other. Fire spreads on things like oil/whiskey/you; water flows down hills; gasses rise; sand can be kicked around; etc.. Then you also have an insanely complex magic system where you can make a near infinite amount of different spell combinations and wand functions. The cherry on top is that there is a lot out there if you ever get ballsy enough to walk off the main path. It is genuinely one of the most beautiful games I have every played.

PSA to any newfags to this game: disable Steam's cloud backup for this game. When your world save starts getting absolutely massive (when you really start walking off the beaten path), the cloud backup is gonna shit the bed and start doing some unsavory shit randomly. Also, if you ever start seeing this screen upon loading your world, you might want to end the run or go to New Game+ before your world becomes too unstable. If you go long distances in one session, it's a smart idea to reload the engine from time to time. Restart with Selected Mods Enabled in the menu will do this without needing to manually close and reopen the game.

>>715203490Yeah. There's a lot of crazy, esoteric mechanics that involve breaking the game to complete some of the real out-there quest lines. Beating the final boss of this game for the first time is practically when the tutorial stops and the real game begins. I'd be surprised if you've even made it past Hiisi Base at 30h in.
