Unitonically OP, its because the adults who play Annal Crossing now are neurotic control freaks who spaz out when a villager wears a shirt they dont like. Nintendo has been capitulating and pandering to them more and more with each release up to New Horizons where youre almost literally God and can terraform even the fucking land and water to your liking, as well as decorate every villager's house personally and dress them.

Is it true that the villagers aren't rude in the Japanese versions of the first few games and that was only something done by the localizers?

Animal crossing needs an actual reputation system. You can't make everyone happy and that's just a part of life.

I think people over fixate on the occasional mean comment in the original and forget that every villager in general was multifaceted and wasn't just a single anime cliché stretched out for 500 lines of dialogue like the modern games. The villagers were the main event in the original game but now they are just set dressing to an infinite grind of fish/bug/fossil collecting

The shirt changer thing at the town hall was implemented because people would put up swastikas and dicks as patterns and villagers would pick them up. This was way before NH, people did this in CF.
