Why is it that so few JRPGs incorporate formation systems like SaGa games do? No, simple front row/back row does not count from shit like Final Fantasy since it barely has a use there except when playing low level runs.

it doesn't really add much strategic depth imo. i feel like a "defend" action, speed stats and support buffs accomplish the same thing without making things overly fiddly.
a character's role on the battlefield should emerge from his stats and abilities, the customization of which is the most satisfying aspect of turnbased combat

Formation systems are really hard to design well and balance, SaGa itself struggled for years with that and tip-toed around so many different versions of it before starting to get it mostly right.

because the vast majority of jrpgs that people even know about (not that they play them, mind you) are puddle-deep rudimentary fluff that was slopped in just so the game could call itself anything other than what it actually is: a glorified visual novel dating sim
the combat systems of these games that plebs notice never had any thought put into them, and if they had then the plebs would ignore them because complex systems are far too much for the average normalgroid nigger who just wants a roundabout way to look at porn and coom while calling it not looking at porn and not cooming
