Get a friend or two, play coop. It gives you a shared revive meter that causes the run to end if you die too much. Choose a weapon for stam breaking and one for hp breaking. You'll use them respectively for stam breakong yokai to kill them and just slashing humans to death. Dump points into the 2 weapons + balance a little bit of hp and stam if your weapon specs don't use them.

Ninjutsu and Onmoyoji are broken as fuck and trivialize the game but are also very much "all in " stats until you're in NG+2 or +3 where you're maxed everything. Choose spirits that compliment your stats same with yokai abilities. I like to being them as stat sticks + 1 for aoe and 1 for shredding stam broken enemies. Collect and use the kodama boosts they help alot with grinding early game. Do all the side missions as well. If you're solo don't be afraid to ring the bell for help this game is most fun with friends.

Just play dark souls

hit a few times, then back off and wait for your ki to come back. Maybe flux once in a a while but that pretty much gets your through the whole meme game

Tips for noobs:
-Mastering ki pulsing is step number 0
-Always keep your equip load in the green
-Get yokai shift by using yokai abilities
-Save yokai shift for dark realm mode since it lasts longer

Unlocking combos is definitely better than mashing square. Like, square + triangle for odachi carried me through the whole game, it's a great fast 3-hit combo

1. Level all stats evenly to 20

If you come from souls slop, don't treat it like souls slop
If you come from Wo Long, don't try it like Wo Long
If you come from Jack's Game, no fucking idea but don't treat it like that
If you come from Rise of the Ronin, treat it like RotR but with blocking and dodging only

Basically blocking when you get hit = good since you recover very fast. First boss on the ship teaches you that, you can block the double ball spin even tho the first hit breaks your guard

Manage ki reasonably well. as in, don't go more than half point if possible when fighting most enemies untill you are fully aware of what they can do
Ki pulse all the fucking time. Get Flulx and learn to flux

2kat or bigkat is probably the best/safest weapon type early on. 1kat is kinda good when you get some more skills in midgame
Also sloth/blinding shell or whatever the fuck it is and living weapon are crutches. You can use them but still learn how to fight

What part specifically is raping you? If you say Hino-Enma, that's normal and you will survive but turn off the fucking music since it's a massive distraction

Like any action game: learn the mechanics and as you play, the muscle memory will start to kick in and you'll gradually get better. So mainly you'll first get used to ki pulsing after each attack string and then you'll start to add that extra input to stance switch right after (flux).

Oh yeah, this is a really important tip too, especially if you have Soulsborne bias. When you're staggered (which happens often if you get hit), you're stunlocked, but you can always block, so make blocking a reflex

Ki pulse is key. The hardest part of the game is the first few hours. Don't worry about all the stats with your equipment until late game or the dlc; defence and staying under 70 percent load is important for movement and ki. Armour sets are good, but make sure that you're not sacrificing defence. Use consumables. Damage done is what determines how much your proficiency raises and how many skill points you get, including for ninjitsu and magic, so try to work out what enemies are weak too. Don't worry about dying, but make sure you level up as often as possible.

A mix of ki pulsing to get back ki, and animation canceling with yokai abilities to keep a combo going as your ki will regen even during a yokai ability. Short ones like Ippon-Datara are really good for extending a combo and for staggering even Yokai. Longer ones are good finishers as you'll regen ki back while it's happening, but you still gotta be careful with them.
