>>715215678
if it's licensed for commercial use and properly credited then they did nothing wrong. if it's not licensed for commercial use they could still work with the original guy who made it to get an exception. Considering situations like that get taken massively seriously and every single instance of it going to court has resulted in the big company losing, I'm absolutely gonna need to see a citation.

Just a reminder.

>1991 - Naka and Ohshima create Sonic 1
>1992 - Sonic 2, the Japanese Sonic Team flew over to America to work with the American team, hoping that the Americans would learn a thing or two on game development. But it didn't work out and there was a culture clash
>Sonic 2 had around half and half Japanese and American developers, Yuji Naka often saying "baka"
>Tom Kalinske made Sega go from 0,3% of market share to 40% in less than 5 years, made Sega compete with Nintendo with the Genesis, managed to make loads of special deals with the gaming industry
>Kalinske's plan for a console price drop, and to include Sonic as pack-in
>1993 - Sonic 3, Yuji Naka refused to work with the Americans at all. In fact, he demanded security cards so that the Americans couldn't get into their office. So the American team made Sonic Spinball while the Japs made Sonic 3 & Knuckles
>Sonic 3 was planned with SVP, the special calculation chip used in the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, for Sonic 3D
>They were working on a 3D isometric version of Sonic 3 for Sega's SVP chip, a competitor to Nintendo's Super FX, but Sega of Japan cut costs on the chip and Sonic Team had to walk away from the project.
>Right as they did that, Sega America revealed they had sealed a deal with McDonalds for Sonic 3 toys in Feb of 1994 and the game had to be out in less than 9 months. So Sonic Team had to really mega-crunch to make the biggest game of their careers in a very short amount of time
>1994 - 32X is created as a quick response to the Atari Jaguar, two 32-bit SuperH-2 processors, the same as those that would be used in the Saturn but with a lower clock speed
>Genesis owners that invested in the Sega CD and 32X add-on were sorely disappointed
>1995 - Saturn releases, was designed around a new Hitachi CPU, but it's bad for 3D
>Sega lost so much money on the Saturn years that the company just couldn't afford to remain in the console wars.
>1997 - One last hope. Dreamcast

>1995 - Saturn releases, was designed around a new Hitachi CPU, SH-2
>1996 - Bernie Stolar gave STI the NiGHTS engine to mess around with for a few weeks while they were making X-treme, but Yuji Naka threw a temper tantrum and threatened to quit Sega in response, so they had to let go of it
>1997 - Dreamcast with SH-4 as a joint venture between Sega and Hitachi
>Sonic Jam is released for the Saturn, containing Sonic 1-3 ported by Naka himself to SH-2 and elements from the then-forthcoming Adventure
>Sonic Adventure begins development as a showcase for Dreamcast hardware. Adventure fields, 10 Sonic stages, transparencies, lighting, FMVs, voice acting, etc
>Chaos according to Iizuka the director was made to shock, surprise people, something you would say "this is only posible on the Dreamcast"
>Genesis can't do transparency, Saturn can't do transparency, Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer
>SA1-2 used diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices like some Saturn games
>SA1 was a game made by a maximum of 100 people, and only 11 people went to the US. Then, it was no longer possible to make 2 on that scale. I was hoping to make a small-scale game in the U.S., but at the time, Naka told me, โ€œYou can take our Japanese members with you and just make 2.โ€ So when it came time to make 2, the starting point of the project was โ€œHow can we make 2 with this (small) number of people?โ€
>1999 - Iizuka goes to USA to patch up SA1 and begin SA2
>Iizuka: I had these ideas in my mind from when I was making Sonic Adventure 1 that if I were to make a second game, I wanted to have a โ€œrival character who looked exactly like Sonicโ€ and to be able to play two scenarios, one with Sonic and the other with the rival character
>2000 - Dreamcast was flopping hard. Iizuka was determined to sell it on the Dreamcast at any cost

>2001 - Iizuka sends a request to Nintendo of America for a GameCube dev kit, ports SA2 and begins Heroes development
>Iizuka conceived Sonic Advance, but was understaffed on employees familiar with the GBA hardware and so recruited Dimps former Neo Geo Pocket Color dev to work on Sonic Advance 1-3 and Sonic Rush
>Iizuka pretty much makes Heroes by himself for 3 consoles with radically different hardware (PS2, GC, Xbox)
>2003 - SADX GameCube port, Heroes, Sonic X
>2004 - Sonic Team was making like 5-6 different games with only 20-30 people on each project, and all Sonic products were given 2 years by Sega
>Iizuka plays Jak II and Ratchet and Clank and is inspired to create Shadow 05
>2005 - Xbox 360 releases. Very easy to make games for, like Dreamcast. Next gen begins. Sonic 06 begins development as a showcase for Xbox 360 hardware.
>2006 - PS3 releases. They were given the CELL without any information on how to get up and running and were just expected to figure it out. Wii is basically a GameCube 1.5 with motion controls.
>Yuji Naka and a sizable portion of Sonic Team abandoned 06 development and the company
>the remaining team is split up into two portions, one that works on 06 and the other that works on Secret Rings (formerly the Sonic 06 Wii port)
>Sega insisted on a holiday release for 06 despite barely over a year in the oven and all this other shit going down
>Build that shipped is actually less polished than the Xbox 360 demo because they could not finish off their current build.
>Sonic Adventure formula is considered a laughing stock because of 06 development

>wouldn't work with americans
>yet there are americans who worked on it anyway and most famously, also had collaberation from michael fucking jackson
This nigga is not only retarded and his seething plan failed, but completely tries to sabotage his own work since the beginning. He's a born fucking snake.

>>Yuji Naka and a sizable portion of Sonic Team abandoned 06 development and the company
And then went on to become a failure who never made anything worthwhile again for the rest of his career. Should have stayed at sega, but alas.. his ego got to him

Sonic Jam>>715212146 was a lot like this and how I learned of the other sonic games and anime OVA as a kid. I never would have known about the 3D fighting and racing game if it wasn't for Jam's museum. Hell I wouldn't have known about the Sega CD if it wasn't for that game. Sonic World was cool as shit for a collection game.

why was naka such a diva to work with? was it just regular xenophobia against americans or did he think he was such hot shit for making sonic 1 that it felt beneath him to work with anyone outside sonic team? in hindsight though it does explain how we ended up with shit like balan from him down the line

>Shadow 05 and Sonic 2006 damaged the franchise for a while. IGN hated Sonic's "Shitty" Friends
>Sonic gets a soft-reboot. Shadow and Silver are wiped out.
>2007 - Hedgehog Engine was basically built from the ground up to emulate movie-quality lighting and rendering
>2008 - Unleashed is a passion project for Sega, they hired an entirely new team, new blood, which then developed the hedgehog engine. They're still using the same engine to this day
>2009 - Sonic Colors began as a Generations Wii version, built stop of the Secret Rings codebase for Wii, became Morio Kishimoto's Sonic Colors
>2009 - Sonic Generations begins development, built directly atop the Sonic Unleashed codebase for Xbox 360 hardware
>2009 - Project Needlemouse is announced. "Sonic 4". Completely flops and is completely forgotten. Not even Iizuka remembers it.
>2011 - Sonic Generations releases as a love letter to Sonic
>2011 - SEGA sign the contract with Nintendo which made them release Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom Wii U and Sonic Boom 3DS
>2011 - Sonic Lost World was developed for the PC first before they started the contract work to make it work on the Wii U, directed by Morio Kishimoto
>2016 - Sonic Mania was a fan project that was successfully pitched to Iizuka during development
>2016 - Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania are announced. Sega spent 3 years upgrading the Hedgehog Engine to Hedgehog Engine 2, and 1 year to develop the game
>2017 - Sonic Mania is kino. Sonic Forces flops.
>Morio Kishimoto spends 5 years development Frontiers. Iizuka wants Frontiers to be ambitious, just like Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure 1 were.
>"Open zone" inspired by SA1's adventure fields
>2022 - Shadow Generations is built directly atop of the Frontiers codebase.
>2026 - Frontiers 2 will probably be built directly stop of the Shadow Generations codebase
