Nobody is guilt free of this (pic related) but perhaps the audience too has delusions about games as franchises, a set up pretense established through marketing. There was a time where every console would be met with a round of "can't wait for the next sonic, metroid, streets of rage, crash bandicoot." As if they're predetermined the moment a new box came around. Every generation is met with this but at the same time the original creators of many series' would want to do something entirely new. Sometimes games a one-off, and that's all there is. Sometimes a story is complete - maybe Mass Effect Andromeda would have been a good excuse for a new sci-fi universe.
