That's what backlight strobing technology on LCDs is still trying to solve. Nvidia's pulsar modules being the latest technology. But considering most of this board shills for OLED monitors they're stuck with shitty blackframe insertion. Maybe simulating the beams on CRTs might work out for oleds, but they need to get to 480hz for that to be just enough. Probably 1000hz is the more realistic point.

no, it's not
just take the basic precautions, set your screen timeout low, lower the screen brightness and get some proper light blockage for your gaming room with some dark curtains
oled in the wild burns in because it's old and it shows the same picture for hours at max brightness
if you're still worried get some 240hz fast ips, that's second best

windows screen timeout is a bit sketchy. Once came home and saw my oled was on and probably had been for over 10 hours just showing my desktop. Checked it with a fullscreen solid color and yea there was a lot of small burn in. The screen refresh thing cleaned it up for the most part thankfully and the burn in that is left is hard to notice.

VRR flicker makes OLED crap for gsync or freesync. Response times are good if you get a decent panel but they're bad for variable refresh rate adaptive sync because of an inherent flaw in the technology.

I cannot verify whether burn in is still a problem on OLEDs. But what i can tell you that if you use a monitor with Gsync you will eventually run into a scenario where you'll notice VRR flicker. /v/ never speaks about it because there are marketing departments posting on here trying to push people towards buying OLED monitors without mentioning such a fatal flaw, that is not present on LCDs or even the FALD equivalents in Mini LEDs.
Consolefags don't notice it because they're blind.

my monitors were supposedly prone to burn in (but not oled), i've been using them for 10 years, very minor burns around the edges that are barely noticeable and go away as the monitor warms up for the day

my desktop background is solid color -> black, i have no desktop icons, every piece of software i run i use a dark theme, and my taskbar i run auto-hidden then use translucent taskbar on top to remove the final pixel

takes a few minutes to set up a new pc like that, but it def works in my experience at least, my previous monitors before these were burned to fuck because i had all these bright desktop backgrounds i'd leave them idling on for hours

The only benefit of oled is the contrast but to take full advantage of that you need a "perfect" room. If you are in a normal room were you can't or don't want to do light control all the time, and oled makes no sense. you just get a less bright display that costs more for no reason.

And that's a real problem because we have a lot of 'professional' reviewers online who have never acknowledged it, it's easier to go unnoticed for the tv focused section because they're more multipurpose than gaming. Rtings is the only one who put out a video on it, and i think even they downplay the severity of the issue. But at least they started including a testing bench for it on their site. But what's more important is that there are PC hardware enthusiast channels that never mention it in reviews, don't have any test benches or anything. It's like it doesn't exist if you were to look at any popular channel. Hardware Unboxed/Monitors unboxed has never done a video on it and I'm sure he helped move many monitors with his shilling considering he did with all of those OLED burn in test videos (the shameless motherfucker wears OLED t shirts in videos)

It's a real problem that should have a disclaimer and testing scenario for reviews of OLED monitors. If you don't think it should be talked about then you're covering up a flawed product. It's more unacceptable that it's not happening for gaming monitors rather than it is with TVs.

NTA. I have an OLED. I bought it the other day because I liked the idea of high contrast. I had no idea you needed a pitch black room. I literally do have blinds in my room, there is no room that has ever existed in the last 100 years that does not have curtains or blinds. Light still gets through, enough light to ambiently illuminate the room and I can see my whole face and the wall behind me all day until around 9pm. I'll enjoy it more in the winter I guess. Your crippled eyesight does not make it less of a problem for normal people.

Had the same issue with my LG C2 OLED TV. It was not very usable, especially in the summer months having to wait for sundown to get the full effect. And no I don't want to turn my living room into a dark cave every time I want to watch TV. Now I am back to a mini led TV and that thing can hit 1600nits full screen with ease. the C2 for reference struggle to hit 160nits full screen and only got dimer with age.

>it's really not and thats why no one gives a fuck about it
Until they inevitably notice it that is. But that's when the buyers remorse subtly starts to kick in, so they just ask the zealouts on /r/OLED about what to do with their monitor and they kindly inform them to turn off Gsync. Despite the fact that the monitor that was sold to them was listed as gsync compatible. People fall into the trap, don't know what to do and accept defeat.

Fair enough. How about you post a picture of your eyes first to prove you don't use glasses then I'll post all that stuff. If you don't have 20/20 vision then your opinion is not valid in this discussion.

This was a particularly bad choice for you to lie about, because I actually specifically have this TV and it's downstairs next to a sliding door that the sun shines through for me all day, and I've never even once had any light-related issues in spite of that.

I don't understand how fucking 50's technology can be faster than fucking 2020 technology.
Why the fuck can't they precisely replicate the way CRT's drew pixels across the screen with our supposed highly advanced technology???

No, OLED's absolutely cannot get bright fullscreen or they will literally melt themselves.
All OLED's have extremely aggressive ABL and pretty much ruins HDR gaming.
Imagine you are staring at a bright light in the distance that's glowing at 1000 nits, then as you walk towards it and it fills more than 50% of your screen the entire thing dims to 200 nits, completely ruining your immersion.

brother, the TV does not get very bright it is a factually correct statement. If you need data look it up on rtings. It says 178nits Sustained 100% Window. That is not bright enough to be usable in a well lit living room. In the dark it was obviously fine.

You can go to RTINGS and pull up any OLED review and scroll to the peak brightness measurements to confirm it.

First of all your replies were to the wrong people. So if someone else is complaining about an OLED then it's likely their own story.
>seriously wtf causes this kind of mental illness?
Secondly, I just saved an anon money on something that i told him was going to be a problem and suddenly I'm schizophrenic? the reality is that what i mentioned is a marketers department nightmare and they cannot ever spin it, so it's best not to acknowledge it. It's best to pretend it's minuscule among gamers who care about the quality of the image on their screens. It's just shocking that it's coming from trusted reviewers online who popularized the oled shilling on /v/ in the first place. The Youtube tech tubers saying stuff like 'why buy an expensive graphics card or CPU if your monitor is not liek an OLED?' is what started this whole trend of getting people to beta test something that still needs to be ironed out. If it's even possible to iron it out that is.

LG C2 OLED is rated at around 180nits full screen brightness. It can reach 800 in a 10% window but ABL will kick in pretty fast

I will point out that I've experienced flicker in less drastic scenarios that Rtings presented here, fluctuations that were minor. But this will explain it in the most simple terms.
