As someone who's only ever heard of the series in passing I only had an N64 growing up,are the new "pixel" remastered version of the final fantasy games worth a look or should I hunt down the original PS1 version of each?

I understand that FF VII & X weren't included because that's where the series started switching to 3D??

I have no clue as I don't have the pixel collection. I didn't play the original as a kid, but as a teen I did emulate them and played the GBA/SNES versions. You can run those emulators with a literal toaster or your phone, so I'd just play them that way instead of wasting money. I'm sure some autist here probably knows some super duper autistic suped up faggot way of playing it, but I would it emulate it.

They are not hard to emulate and some versions like the GBA ones have more content.
On top of that, the pixel version have a stupid scrolling problem. The game runs at 60 Hz but the world map scrolls at 80 pixels per second, so if you walk it scrolls 1 pixel, 1 pixel, 2 pixels, 1, 1, 2 โ€ฆ the whole time. I don't know if you can mod this.
Other than that, I do like them. I like the look, I like the soundtrack, 8-/16-bit and orchestra, I do like the exp boost setting (grinding is just investing time in these games, so grind 5 minutes on 4x instead of 20 minutes). Please change the font to the retro one.
Get the pixel ones if the money doesn't hurt you.

Play 1, 2, and 4 on PSP, 3 on DS, and 5 and 6 on GBA.

Pixel remaster has a problem with jittery screen scrolling, at least in 5 and 6 and on PC, but giving the nature of the problem, I assume it's the same on the other platforms. Other than that the games were fine. Even if there's some rebalancing that was done somewhere, who cares. It's final fantasy, it's always designed in a way that dumb kids would be able to beat it.

They're nes and snes games.
They are kind of worth a playthrough but they look a lot a like and only 6 has a pretty good story.
Just play 6. If you left wanting more buy another one, but I dont think that will happen in todays world/market

What you do just don't play the pixel remasters. You could argue 1,2,3 PR is not bad, but 4,5 and especially 6 PR are garbage. Just emulate the originals.

Play FF1 first. Play either the GBA or PS1 port if you don't want to deal with NES jank. Next, play FF4 and 5 on either the SNES or GBA. The only good version of FF6 is the SNES one.

If you enjoyed those games, then and only then would I recommend playing FF2 and 3. FF2 is an acquired taste and is ok if you ignore everyone's advice of breaking the game mechanics and just play it as it was intended. FF3 is like a lesser version of 5.

I wouldn't bother with the PSP ports either because they're basically just the GBA games with shittier graphics.

Play the GBA/PSP versions of them, and DS for FF3. I've never tried the pixel remasters, but I've heard very mixed things about them. Also, every true FF fan should experience the NES version of the original FF at least once.

Oh yeah, I guess translation is probably different and looks like it was "punched up" by the usual suspects. I've played 5 back in the day on PS1 and don't remember much, but I highly doubt that there was a ninja turtles reference in the script.

FF1/2 on PlayStation is far superior to the GBA or PSP ports. There's no issues with load times either, unlike the prior FF ports to the PS1.

Pixel Remasters for 1-5 are actually good, except for the mentioned scrolling problem. You get used to it. Pretty good for playing on mobile too if you're into that kind of thing. Against all odds Square even added a pixel font later, which you should use.
The new pixel look is pretty nice, some assets are of course reused, games still look visibly different too, so they weren't super lazy with it. Magic looks great and the games uses some good looking effects for fog, water etc. it's overall really nice. I also think the remastered OSTs are great.

FF6 is a mixed bag. Some scenes are enhanced. The QoL features are welcome. The remaster graphics don't really fit the original vision though, as it is a much darker game overall. Sprites are actually less detailed than the SNES version. And of course mind boggling decisions like using the super bright GBA textures for the over world map, which destroys the original intent even more. I saw some nice mods for PC that fix most of the problems.

Based and correct.
I wouldn't discount 1, 2 and 4 on the PSP, though. Just don't play TAY or consider it canon if you do.
Also you forgot to tell them about the 3D version of IV, which is also good, but should be enjoyed after playing the original.

VI PR takes too many liberties like with the music and is loaded with bugs that weren't in any of the other version., but it's been a minute since I played it so, so maybe they patched them out. I doubt it, though.
Also the font is fucking terrible.

>>715239730
>>715239818
And these. FFVI is supposed to be a dark game, and the coloring, even with the gamma turned down, makes everything stick out, which is very noticeable in Narshe, or Terra's hair quality.
I can't believe they picked someone that didn't even sound like Celes. The original with the SNES is still superior with its tonal "singing". Posting the superior opera version.

Also what >>715240061 said. Honestly, even with the GBA sound and color patches, it still isn't 1:1 from the originals, even if GBA IV looks good. I never find the extra content in IV and VI worth the trade, but the necro class in V is pretty cool.

>>715241353
And finally, this. I think the sale recently on GMG was the lowest it's ever been in the years they've been out and it's still over 45 dollars. SQee is just too greedy for their own good, without wanting to put in the effort to actually make a superior remaster that does everything the originals do.

Those are the best modernish versions of 1 and 2 yes. Downside is loadtimes that comes with optical media but they mechanically preserve the originals while offering the best rendition of the soundtrack in my opinion.
FF anthology (4&5 if european, 5&6 if NA) is more of a mixed bag. I'm Europeland so to me 4 was decent enough and it's not based on the easy type unlike the NA SNES release. 5's translation is notoriously shitty on PS1.

Were the load times for FFV as bad as FFVI? A while back I bought the versions of FFV and FFVI that they had on the ps3 store and I think they were essentially the PS1 versions. I beat V and really liked it, but could never force myself to beat VI to this day. I've always wondered whether the problem was worse loading times or whether I just didn't like the game as much.
