So before the round starts, YOU have to go save villagers that are trapped in the area. You then give them a class (melee, archer, magic etc) and place them where you think it'd be strategic. All while you're on basically a timer.
Then the hell portal opens up, the goal is for you and the villagers to protect the priestess who needs to get to the gate to cleanse it.
You can move around and attack the enemies. The maiden is extremely fragile so you need to make sure the fiends don't start going for her.
Once the gate is clensed, you go to the next one. Rinse and repeat.
There are different types of enemies and some times there are a level dedicated to a boss that is more action orientated then the usual tower defense stuff.
You upgrade your character and the classes what the villagers can change into with random collectibles that teaches you about cool trivia stuff about Japan's historical culture irl.

Yeah, once the possessing seethe started spawning I found it to be easier to camp around the maiden instead of the gates, since they would often possess my villagers before they could kill them. In general, I would set a sumo and ascetic in front of the maiden and Marksmen behind her, and Shaman in between so that everything would be in her healing range. I had a blast but even the combat was somewhat disappointing in that we lost some of the moveset diversity in charge or stagger input. Some classes had charge core skills to unlock. But that was is. All the staff are fairly inexperienced (except for certain key figures) and they made this as part of internal training.

Technically speaking this game is really good. Solid gameplay, great animation, good performance and the best visuals in a recent Capcom game.
