Why do so many say its a masterpiece? Its a great game, but far from even being the best one Fromsoft made.

Over 10 years old and firmly established as a timeless classic with the NES and SNES greats.
Demons Souls and DS 2 are also amazing games, but have things that bring them down a little bit compared to Dark Souls.

Its the platonic base of the series in which every sequel experimented in a different direction while neglecting other aspects.
The disconnect comes from the fact that the overall direction the series eventually went in was primarily based in its action elements over its RPG ones and so latecomers treat the game as a primitive version of what they want out of the franchise rather than a thing of raw potential with aspects that draw others in that they wouldn't care for.
