I think COTW came out roughly at a time where people were open to play new fighters- SF has been out for a few years and some players have beef with it, Tekken is a trainwreck, Strive is losing steam. I think it could've potentially nursed a strive-tier playerbase, 2000-some loyal players. I don't think Ronaldo is the sole factor in it not attaining that, but I don't think it helped at all.

I've seen marketing and hype for indies instantly dry up at the first sign of a harassment allegation. Ronaldo had a dragged-out, highly-public assault allegation where it looks to me like he probably did the shit he was accused of and I'm not the kind to automatically believe these kinds of allegations without proof. People praise the gameplay in this, but I don’t see it. The blatant SF6-inspired Rev system sucks ass. The whole Overheat system sucks. Everyone does the same Rev Art -> Rev Art -> Rev Art combo with a DP Brake and/or super in there somewhere. Damage is ludicrously high. (eat a 60% combo for guessing wrong on a throw) Guard Cancels are lame and should have been left in the 90s. And, honestly, most of the characters in this game have lame kits and aren’t all that interesting to play. Especially not compared to other FGs.
