In most of those its not the zombies that overran society, but the disease itself. The green flu infects you if you so much as breath the same air as an infected person. The T-virus infects basically anything it touches and turns it into some giant mutant which will come back from the dead a dozen times after you kill it, each time being tougher than the last. The pilots in L4D aren't, so they keep getting infected and crashing from the survivors. RE doesn't have the military getting overun though. In fact once a proper response gets underway whatever threat is there is generally beaten handily. One of the big things to realize is that in concept, fast moving zombies are a problem, especially ones that migrate. At any point even if you could "contain" an area all it takes is one zombie to wander off through a path no one's looking at and then stumble upon some retard and the problem starts up again.

As dumb as the 28 weeks later plot point was, it puts it into perspective. How do you reclaim cities? Do you wait it out and hope people haven't been getting chain infected? Do you pray that there isn't one small tiny spot not covered where one zed starts rapidly spreading the virus yet again? Do you pray whatever biochemical warfare you deploy can sufficiently remove the problem so again there isn't just one infected that fucks everything up?

When all it takes is one mistake it's not that hard to believe. Stuff like the walking dudemans is hard to believe since they're all legit walkers. They do have super strength I think? And I forget how it even started I think that might have been airborne first. But the continual downfall to walking zombies is something I could never understand without it being tethered to an airborne virus.

That is the other thing to consider. How it all started. Airborne viruses are just completely fucked. I could also believe resurrection type stuff if zombies could physically dig themselves out of a cemetery since you'd just have hundreds of thousands of zombies in every city laying siege without everyone getting a fair warning. But if the plots don't involve fast movers or indestructible super strong dead boys, then I just can't wrap my head around walkers being able to do any real damage unless hordes of them kept migrating towards and overrunning safe areas.

Its OK but you get endgame gear too quickly and the gameplay loop of "I cant do anything until I find 75 magazines of a certain type" still needs to be fixed.
Horde nights are fucked because the devs keep balancing it around powergaming min-maxxing fuckwits instead of actual normal players.

The soldiers cannot walk around 24/7 in gas masks all the time. They need food, water, sleep. They are exercising the actual plan of the US Military in this sort of situation "Wait until they starve to death, or decay." and trying to limit movements by destroying bridges.

Resident Evil doesn't even have the police department being overrun, and things like the Tyrant could absolutely delete a unit. The only real problem is the slow spread compared to others on this list.

Same problem as left for dead, but going a step further that it seems to survive, and be carried by wind through sealed rooms. You're basically boned unless you're in a hermetically sealed bunker, or happen to have a sufficient number of troops immune to rally against the otherwise non-threatening zeds.

The RPD does get overrun in re2 though. Maybe not wall to wall zombies but a number get in as described in the notes of the last officers alive. they fought breachesand lose a lot, people get bit and both the east and west wings get lost over time till there's only a few people left who try to leave and most don't make it besides stuff from the outbreak games IIRC. The games also have a number of police zombies out in the streets and re3 shows the police line failing in the opening movie so it also backs up why the RPD might not be super populated since a lot of them were away during the outbreak and only a few who were left at the station or managed to make it back brought the infected with them leading to their downfall. the earlier RE games don't typically include more than half a dozen zombies in large rooms and saves the largest packs of a dozen or more for really special events like the opening in the streets, the part in the remake where the jail cells all open and you're just expected to book it and use a flash grenade instead of gunning them down, especially since mr x pops into that room with them
the battle modes and extra survivor modes is really where they throw large groups at you, hunk having to deal with a ton of enemies but he's given a large assortment of weapons to delete troublesome enemies and expected to juke the more sparse groups - gameplay for those who are really comfortable with not killing everything and avoiding grabs more often than not

L4D the zombie virus is literally just airborne so good fucking luck avoiding it, which also ironically goes against your point because military is like the only institution actually hanging on and it's not like they can effectively prevent civilians from getting infected.
But also once again, even if military dies they aren't even overrun, the virus is just stupidly infectious. You don't have to lose to random zombies when you'll just turn into one by simply breathing in the wrong place.

In Resident Evil all the outbreaks are relatively small incidents and are actually contained, again completely going against what you're saying, no military was overrun and it only starts requiring serious force to stop only in later entries when it's more superpowers bullshit than actual zombie virus, even then it's contained.

The entire fucking point of Dying Light is that it's contained and the city is already quarantined, the virus hasn't spread outside of this one fucking city (or country, it's been a while since I played it) and you're simply dropping into the closed off city.

Last of Us is literally the only game on this list where people have actually been overrun and yeah, arguably it's bullshit but also a lot of it was caused by people infighting rather than the zombies.
