actually pretty good, the way people talked about it I was expecting it to be much worse

I've been hearing people say this for a quarter of a century and it really undersells how well OoT utilizes 3D space. The Water Temple operating in a central hub that occupies a single loading zone spanning multiple floors is something 2D Zelda could never do, and its use of 3D space is what I suspect gives it its infamous reputation in part, for increasing margin of error in getting around. Gold skulltulas too in and of themselves are a brilliant way to capitalize on the game's 3D, being able to put them on any surface.

Kind of a coming of age getting older and breaking away from the shackles of Navi's advice and finding out all the shit you can do out of sequence to completion. Side dungeons can be done pretty much whenever. Main dungeon order has a decent amount of variation. It's funny when I bring up people hated Navi for telling you what to do because gamers hated that back then, and people get incredulous of it. They did and this kind of shit is the exact reason why. Adult portion is comparably permeable to Zelda 1, which, to be fair, has more of a reputation for being "open" than it actually is.

If the overworld in ALttP is the whole map outside of dungeons then the overworld in OoT is more than just Hyrule Field, aka includes Death Mountain, Zora River, Gerudo Desert, etc. and it's fine. And having the Stone of Agony makes Hyrule Field better.

I wouldn't argue with you on that, it's fair. Just get a little tired of "overworld" and "Hyrule Field" being interchangeable in conversation about OoT when it's merely a small portion of it.
