The overall balance between characters is not the issue. There are overly strong yet simple strategies which are very difficult to play around and hurt the game. It's very difficult to punish many things even when you know the other player is going to do them ahead of time. There's a lot of jank where bad players are randomly rewarded. There's also way, way too many invincibility frames so players can do things like roll, spotdodge, or airdodge and it's more likely a player trying to thread the needly and punish them will put themselves into a bad position rather than be rewarded. Very, very difficult to punish on reaction.

less about it being unbalanced and more about it being full of dumb bullshit that isn't fun to deal with. It's one of the least satisfying games I've ever played. Also for some reason there's so much visual clutter that it makes the whole experience worse especially with items. In general it feels like the overall design philosophy of the series got much worse after melee but they used lazy bandaids to try and fix it

Smash Ultimate is probably the most balanced one though.
In all the other smash games there's these huge power gaps. In Brawl, Meta Knight is so good he is banned in tournaments.
Melee is probably the most unbalanced one and I still liked it tho. People literally just don't even bother using the bottom tier characters in Melee because they have no chance of winning unless you get lucky.
In 64 literally every single stage has at least one stage hazard so only one map is even legal and it still has a hazard it just has the least annoying hazard, and I think Pikachu and Kirby are broken in that game.
In Ultimate most of the characters are still viable lol.

The bigger issue that it isn't very fun. I would love to enjoy playing as Banjo after all these years, but why bother when the character requires significant effort just to be mediocre (and hated by randoms)?

This is the worst Smash game to play as a sweaty, but one of the best if you actually enjoy the party fighter (also known as FUN) elements of the game. I think Melee is better in both regards but Ultimste is still fun with the bros, local play for fun is top tier.

Those are players being cocksuckers. I hated 4 and I think Ultimate has a ton wrong with it, but nothing in 4 necessitates stalling. Terrible DLC balance and terrible auto-combos that players fish for. Terrible airdodge spam. Still more healthy at top meta than Brawl. People parrot that Brawl was better because at mid-high level it is indeed a way more interesting game to play than 4 or arguably Ultimate. However, it's way more cancerous the higher you go. Brawl sets took fucking FOREVER and the longer the game went on, the worse it all became. There is just no comparing two dicksuckers holding buttons and snickering to themselves (and getting threatened by TOs for not playing) vs MK doing uairs over and over while ICs sit on a platform and wait to 0-death at a mistake and each of those sets takes a fucking hour. This is a matter of tournament ruleset exploitation. We would see other characters succeed in different formats. The stamina meta, for example, doesn't look like post-covid majors' top 8s. Doubles and squad strike too, which are literally official game modes, but no one wants to play them for some reason.

They're decent. Some of the characters' bots will be very confused on certain maps. Level 9 Jigglypuff bot on smashville will go to the middle platform and spam jumps toward the blastzone until it runs out, falls down, and tries again. The bots can also react frame 1 to your actions, so using items and whatnot can be ineffective depending on bot difficulty level.

The vast majority of characters can't compete at top level. At a certain point, it becomes a numbers game, and those characters simply don't have the kits to compete.
The current ranked 1# player in the world is a plays Min-Min, and ~90% of the cast have zero counterplay to her.

It's not just about "skill" (a vague, nebulous term anyway) it's about matchup experience and strategy and mixups, and yeah character tier can be one factor, but only one, and there are plenty of other ways to influence the match.
