I wish the pro 2 had 2.4g, bluetooth is slow and I feel like the usb-c port is going to be the failure point.
I like the Vader 4. 6 macro keys, swappable stick lengths, and you can twist those rings around the sticks to adjust tension. Microswitch face buttons are an acquired taste, I hated them at first now they're fine.
Only problem I have with it is that the software doesn't let me bind a button to two keyboard keys at once (eg. Ctrl+C) while gameSAAR can handle that just fine.

bought a chink bluetooth gamepad for peanuts during black friday that arrived missing half the features. It's supposed to have 3 modes 2.4ghz (i didn't get the dongle), wired (it only charges when plugged in) and bluetooth which werks. Been using it for 5 years now and it still works perfectly fine, no stick drift or anything despite my mongoloid roommates abusing the shit out of the triggers and sticks while the game loads. It also holds a charge like a motherfucker. I probably charged like 20 times in those 5 years and it never ran out during gameplay

I just got the Nova 2 Lite. The improved d-pad is great but it doesn't have a lock switch for the new back buttons, or a headphone jack port like the G7. So I'm constantly pressing those programmable back buttons by mistake.
Instead they added switches for the triggers that reduce the trigger travel distance... when the controller already has a hair trigger toggle? Lots of weird design decisions here. But that d-pad is really nice.

Yeah that really shits me. I emailed Flydigi and asked them to add it, they just gave me a noncommittal "your request has been forwarded to the dev team" response. Doubt it'll happen any time soon but in the meantime I've just been using reWASD with new free trial accounts one after another. Would rather use JoyToKey since it's properly free but it doesn't seem to have any gyro support as far as I can tell.

V4p is supported by Steam Input now so you can do all that and some more.
I've only recently gotten back into games, so I've been shopping around to try out new controllers. And by far the best feeling controller is the Switch 2 Pro. It just feels so ergonomic in your hands.
Other ones I've tried are:
- 8bitdo Ultimate 2
- EasySMX D10
- Game Sir G7 HE
- FlyDiGi APEX 4
The Switch 2 Pro felt better than all of these, with the EasySMX D10 being a kind of distant second place.
I haven't tried any of those 200$ - 300$ Xbox or PS5 controllers. Those seem like a huge waste of money.

Dualsense is literally the best controller on the market.
8bitdo is shit quality.
Gamesir can't figure out how to connect to a PC unless it's pretending to be a PS4 controller.
Microsoft put the left stick in the wrong spot and doesn't have gyro.
Nintendo put the left stick in the wrong spot too.
Only bad things about Dualsense is lack of hall effect, but I've never experienced stick drift on any controller, so it's a non-issue.

You're autistic.
The left stick being higher means your hands sit evenly on the controller when you are using the buttons and the stick at the same time. Why would you want your left hand to be tilted lower on the controller?

Have the same controller and I couldn't agree more with just how reliable it's been. $15 for a controller that holds a charge and still hasn't developed stick drift is absolute lunacy. I only take issue with the mushy and flimsy d-pad, but the analog sticks are a perfect substitute in most cases.

Sticks need to be on the bottom so you can hit the dpad and face buttons with your index finders. Putting the dpad below the stick requires getting a pro controller and binding those actions to the back. It just easier and cheaper to use the claw grip.

NTA, but the ideal controller should include 6 face buttons + the rebindable rear buttons that are commonplace today. Some games have too many functions to map on standard gamepads, and you'd also have a built-in fightpad.

How is "one hand is positioned differently than the other" the right kind of ergonomics?
With fully 3D modern games you're using the analog sticks most of the time.
With older games you're using the d-pad and buttons most of the time.
Both hands should be with the thumbs at the same level. What's more it's actually pretty awkward to move the left stick with your thumb while hitting L1/LB if they're positioned so close.
Also the thumb has less trouble reaching down to the analog stick than a d-pad at the bottom. D-pads sit nearly flat.

I have that but I can't really think of any modern games that would comfortably use the extra face buttons. As a fighting game player I don't even use them in the oldschool sense, I just put macros like drive impact or roman cancel there because I would rather have heavy punch/kick/dust on the bumper&trigger. Back buttons should really be a universal standard by now though.

I had this issue where the left analog stick didn't go far enough in Clair Obscur and whenever I was running and moved northeast, my character would slow down and stutter as they switched back and forth between running and walking rapidly. I then saw this happen in two other games. I didn't have this issue with the cheap $25 Gamesir someone gifted me for Christmas.

Most are not. As of recently they opted for adding microswitches to everything so you'll get d-pads that are more accurate, but less comfortable to use overall. They're excellent for menuing and nothing the fuck else. Like the xbox series d-pad.
If you're used to the dualshock 3 for fighting games, I don't understand though. That can't be much more comfortable than most d-pads out there. The problem of most current membrane d-pads (yes, even on these third party controllers praised by everyone by 8bitdo and such) is that it's easier to get accidental diagonals. The dualsense d-pad is more comfortable than the dualshock 3 but I find myself to be less accurate with it.
And I don't know what the fuck is wrong with Valve but the deck has one of the worst d-pads. I'd say even worse than the switch pro controller, good lord.

That's happening because these games don't work well with the circularity of dualsense sticks.
You can calibrate those sticks so they overshoot in every diagonal direction by a bit instead of relying on perfect circularity like some morons are doing when they find these tools. That's what fixed it for me on E33 and many other games.

Controller autism is something the fuck else and I have it, I just know.
I have 2 versions of the 8bitdo M30. The first bluetooth version, when it came out, and a similarly wired Xbox branded version. Most people think "oh this is the same shit but the xbox one has more buttons".
Wrong.
There's a not well known mod for the original M30 where you can insert a metal ball to create a pivot for the d-pad. The original has enough clearance where this works for the floating d-pad without feeling stiff. Turns out, the newer one doesn't have that much clearance at all and the "hole" where you're supposed to put that ball is also different. I replaced the d-pads between both to get the loose hole and be able to penetrate it properly, and even then, the d-pad would be too fucking stiff on the new one. And the buttons are less rattly and more silent in the new one.
This information is completely irrelevant to most people here but it's silly how much they change stupid shit like this and nobody points it out because technically they should be the same product with a couple of different features.
>>715352658
maybe the m30 is acceptable. I've used it, it's OK. I'd recommend buying a real saturn pad and a modern wired usb one to mod it with. Just unscrew the controller, swap the old board and the new one. Now you have a real pad & buttons with USB connectivity. If you're OK with 4 buttons + shoulder buttons I think the neogeo pad has a good feel out of the box.
honestly if someone is playing 2D retro games or fighting games I'd recommend just getting a stick & customizing it to your liking. There's more of a learning curve if you use it for fighting games but being able to modify every part of your stick is superior to using a pad if your giga autistic about how something feels. Stick feel too loose? Get stiffer springs or a stiffer stick. Want a longer lever for your grip or comfort? Get a shaft extension or bat top. Want louder buttons? Want quieter buttons? Want snappier buttons? Tons of choices to swap to. A mayflash f500/700 is a good place to start since they got standard sanwa parts. Switch to seimitsu parts if you want more snap/tension, get hayabusa parts if you want a softer/smoother feel.

fun fact, many fighting game enthusiasts have progressively moved away from dedicated fighting sticks and play on keyboard now because it makes complex attacks easier and faster
most dpads are pretty bad and not worth talking about, but some dpads are so good that they are comparable to a keyboard in speed and reliability.
it's not just FGs either: 2d platformers greatly benefit from being able to hold the dpad down without having to worry about inputs being registered as diagonals if you move slightly to the sides, which is a common issue in many bad dpads

When you're meant to calibrate by doing circles, DON'T. Instead, try as much as possible to just push the stick to each cardinal direction. Overshoot is not a bad thing, don't let everyone lie to you telling you that a perfect circle is perfect, because some games don't give a fuck about that sort of perfection.

I have one modded with an LS-62 and just basic ass sanwa buttons. I just don't use it. It's a chore for when I want a quick play. And it's the loudest thing in my fucking house because seimitsu STICKS ARE REALLY FUCKING LOUD CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK.

If you can tolerate a non-rotating lever try the sels-70x silent. I use the standard sels-70x for shmups and like it's tension, it's similar to a ls-56. Silent is the same thing. However neither of them rotate which I prefer but throws off a lot of people.
>But yeah sticks are the superior choice for shmups and such
yeah shmups forced me down this rabbit hole. First I was searching for the perfect pad then ended up on stick road because I wanted to comfortable autofire + subfire + auxiliary action more comfortably than I could with a pad

check for used sticks in your area via fb marketplace or whatever. if there aren't any decent used options an f500 should be fine. my cheap stick is an 8bitdo which is serviceable but lots of people take issue with it's small size. if you don't think that'll bother you if you're mainly going to play at a desk or have a laptop mat to set on your lap it shouldn't a problem

the exact one you posted OP - used Xbox Elite/DS4/Switch and some other brands, but even after less than a year they'd have drift or button issues, despite mild use; I've had this one since early 2024 and it still works like new with zero drift. had my friend get one when he was replacing his DS4, and he's also never going back - don't understand how a 3rd party controller you can get for $30 is better than 1st for double the price, but whatever.

Very good controller overall. Bought some adhesive circle d-pads off AliExpress for a dollar, helps a lot with diagonals. Switch and DS4 modes are as performant as xinput, which is rare for third party.
Main gripes are cheap scratch-prone plastic, xinput gyro is unusably bad, and I prefer symmetrical+touchpad so I favor Sony controllers where those matter.

Potentiometer sticks used in most controllers measure inputs by sliding a copper wiper across graphite. Friction wears these down over time, eventually resulting in stick drift.
Hall effect and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sticks utilize contactless magnetic sensors to eliminate that point of failure.

anything that needs 360 movement so say DMC3 plays way better. Games with fixed angles and non-tank contols again the 360 movement comesin clutch. I think fighting games are unaffected though since you don't need those 360 directions if you can get used to keyboard.

Actually interested in that mod, how much does it help? I recently bought the bluetooth M30, first time having a D-pad like that. First impressions are quite good, but still not used to rolling my thumb around it, and it seems sometimes when I quickly swap it inputs others (ie, going from holding right to directly down quickly, seems for some reason that leads to the left-down diagonal if I do it too quickly). Are you meant to really extend your thumb outwards to only touch the cardinals, or all should be on the same spot like the diagonals?
And, would a pivot for the D-pad be what would help for this?
