Play Diablo 1 for 30 minutes, realize how archaic it is. Then switch to Diablo 2 and play it for the rest of your life.

Diablo 1 is the only one that's an actual proper game with a beginning, gradual progress, and end. You can beat Diablo 1 in a single day when you learn the ropes easily.

Diablo 2 is a slot machine masquerading as an action game.

The first two games.
First game with a restoration mod the gives back a lot of the original cut content like The Butcher's real lair with a intro cinematic for him.

Hot take, the only good one is Diablo 1. Great atmosphere and the dungeon delving is cool. I wish the sequels took more from the NetHack inspiration that the first game had, I find the open environments boring.

2 is much more accessible. If you like it, then play 1

Correct but most fans of the series (and genre) are braindead monkeys and will disagree.

2 might ruin 1 for you so if you really want to play 1 do it first.
There isn't really a need to play 1 if you're just looking for the story though, depends on what you're trying to get out of it.

This.

I like act 1 of Diablo 2 but yeah, it loses the atmosphere quickly.

diablo 1 is a bit simplistic
but it absolutely doesn't mean it's not fun to play
it's a classic for a reason and one of the best games of all time and holds up pretty well

you should definitely start with one
- makes the story of later games easier to follow
- pretty short
- and pretty cheap

play Diablo 1 first. godly atmosphere and straightforward to play.
The gameplay and scale of D2 while superior gets monotonous by nightmare unless you're into skinnerbox game design.
t. grew up with D2 and only recently played D1 last year.
