Removing loading screens did irreparable damage to the scale of monster hunter. When you moved areas you weren't just moving to the room directly beside it you were traveling a long ass distance. When you jumped off a cliff it was a a fucking mountain where you would be falling for several minutes before hitting the ground.

Sorry, anon. I liked the maps in Wilds and Sunbreak too, but what you posted just looks like the scale of this single zone here >>715336773
It's even sillier in the three newest games than just scale too, since it makes the monsters all hang out like a kilometre from each other.

I don't feel like responding to each of you individually so I'll try to make broad responses. I like how scale is represented in both games for different reason. The art looks great in the Classic era. They can give the feel that the world is MUCH larger. In the end it's just flat art. I like how far they've gotten with Wilds, because it's actually modeled in game. In this pic you can see the Windward Plains monument. I'm amazed at the technological significance I suppose, but I feel like it's just as beautiful as some things you find the classic era

The point people are making is that due to how the new maps are seamless, in terms of scale and not actual traversal, the newer games are a lot smaller. In the older games the implication of the loading screen transitions is that you're traveling absurd distances and protecting the entire countryside. Meanwhile in the newer titles the actual area you're covering in the entire game is about the same as a single map from the past games, the sense of scale is completely off.

my problem with all modern games is i know for a fact that everything in between is flat, or little hallways to hide having too much geometry on screen, which is the proper way to do it. my issue is the "what if?" feeling of older games just resonates with me more. i see a giant open world, i know how flat it actually is, i know the limits, and i know that even when i hit those limits, i'm gonna get slapped with a "can't go there lol" message, which obliterates the believability. i know there's nothing out there, but the "what's out there?" thoughts are just more interesting than "oh, it's a bunch of photoscanned rocks, and an invisible wall".

I understood that, I just don't necessarily agree. In a ton of maps (not all), it didn't feel like the room transition implied I was traveling a long ass distance. When I jumped off a mountain, I didn't feel like I was falling several minutes. I didn't say that anon was wrong, I just said he was being hyperbolic

You're right but I still think the series had to evolve past the loading screens. World and Wilds do a good job of creating general scale but imagination & loading screens do an insane amount of heavy lifting that just can't be replicated in a game that wants to let you actually run the distance seamlessly without most of your hunt time being monster chase time, something Rise and now Wilds are adamantly against (Think too many people got lost in Ancient Forest and it fucked up the dev team)

neat, but i felt the illusion of an area was gone, because i was zipping across the whole thing in seconds. the movement feels good, but it absolutely contributes to rise feeling like a speedrunning sessions, where every hunt is just teleporting to the monster, dumpstering it, and then warping back to town to look at twin titties for a few seconds before your next 3 and a half minute curbstomp.

Some of them you weren't, often it literally was just into the cave or down a small cliff. In the end it's not a big deal either way I suppose, the important part is the level design itself and how it feels to fight in those areas. Sadly Monster Hunter hasn't really ever done too well with that aspect, so it's just a matter of preference. Not like there's anything wrong with a game being set in a single region anyway.

Everything you just described is what makes Monster Hunter so great. Each title stands on it's own and doesn't invalidate the other. Monster Hunter 1, G, and Freedom are essentially the same game, but they all offer pretty different experiences. Each game has a different roster, which means different weapons/armors/skills to choose from. Rathalos from 1st gen, doesn't feel the same as 3rd or 6th. The weapons feel different between each title. Classic Era is an entirely different feel than the Modern Era, but I love both equally.

All I'm saying is that I love Monster Hunter and it makes me depressed that these comfy threads basically don't exists anymore

world and wilds turned a niche game with a comfy community, into a soulless product with a giant community, that evaporated in a month. chasing normies kills everything good.

No anon. This is exactly what I'm talking about. World and Wilds are both great. They both have things to criticize just like any other game. I started with 3U. I've played every game since. World is my favorite because of the incredible highs. I went back and played MH1 and love it just as much as any other game. I think Wilds has the greatest base game in the franchise and it's on track to being my favorite title. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's soulless.

Not even close. Just like Freedom 2/Unite aren't the same game as Dos. Just like Tri isn't the same game as 3U (and more blatantly 3P). It's only starting with 4 that the games didn't fundamentally change that much anymore beyond adding more to the story.
