1 is a spaghetti western through and through

2 is the best cowboy game there is with an unparalleled variety of activities. BUT the story and characters are so safe and market friendly it's ridiculous. The gameplay is also a lot slower, the missions tedious and the game feels bloated at times.

RDR1 is just boring in general. Not enough shit going on in the open world to make it interesting. Go to mission pointer, watch cutscene, shoot some mexicans, repeat.

With RDR2's you're in for "what if a Californian HR lady wrote a cowboy setting".

Yes, but RDR and RDR2 are not made by a genius and they have almost nothing in common with Sergio Leone's creations.

RDR is boring but there is some gameplay there if you find it.

RDR2 is dreadfully boring. It is made exclusively for the ultra-casual player who mistakes "GrApHiCs" for gameplay. It's not a game. It's a movie that sometimes acts like a sight-seeing simulator.

RDR1 has infinitely better story, writing and soundtrack. RDR2 focuses on quantity over quality and has some of the most tedious parts of a video game I've played (ch 1 & 5). It also has extremely inconsistent character writing, especially for John and Javier. It's also a lot more "safe" and inoffensive. But RDR2 also has an infinitely better world that actually feels alive and is fun to just get lost in. Both games are good for different reasons and can be played in any order.

RDR2 is a literal hate letter to westerns. The protagonist is an annoying self-hating cuck with zero charisma or testosterone. You get preached to about muh women's rights and heccin racism. You save heccin negros from comedically incompetent KKK. You can't shoot indians. A random whore can beat your ass in a fistfight. There are STRONG WOMEN. The story has a tone of "we must be...LE BETTER". Main character cries about what a heccin bad person he is in a cutscene before you gun down dozens in the actual game. And gameplay wise it wants really badly to be "cinematic" and "realistic" so all animations are slow and clumsy. Just play Call of Juarez Gunslinger.

Feels good not being a contrarian and being able to objectively see how BIG of an improvement 2 is over 1.
